If you want to play super low frequencies with authority, having a lot of xmax as well as overall throw and power can certainly help.
By the way, most music won't drop below mid-30ish unless we're talking about "synthetic" bass.. frequently heard in rap, dubstep, etc. For my music tastes, hitting lowest audible bass notes with strong authority is not number 1 priority, although my sealed box sub does get me there. You have to realize that your car's cabin determines how much boost and at what frequency you get. Depending on the car and subwoofer, a sealed box can easily give you flat frequency response down to lowest octaves (granted, this won't happen with an 8 and most 10 inch subs). A ported subwoofer tuned to a very low frequency will give you flat FR outside of car, but peaky in the low frequencies inside of car, if that's what you want. In the end, if you have a good equalizer capability you can boost the lows in the 20-30Hz region if you wish, as long as the subwoofer has the stroke and power headroom for this.
