A subwoofer's ability to play low

Could do like a crazy sealed clam shell setup. I have had some great success from those with lots of cheaper subs. lol
Eh, I was happy with how my 18" sounded. Thought I could gain a bit going to three 12"s but definitely didn't. Likely going back to the 18" and playing the box.

If you want to play super low frequencies with authority, having a lot of xmax as well as overall throw and power can certainly help.

By the way, most music won't drop below mid-30ish unless we're talking about "synthetic" bass.. frequently heard in rap, dubstep, etc. For my music tastes, hitting lowest audible bass notes with strong authority is not number 1 priority, although my sealed box sub does get me there. You have to realize that your car's cabin determines how much boost and at what frequency you get. Depending on the car and subwoofer, a sealed box can easily give you flat frequency response down to lowest octaves (granted, this won't happen with an 8 and most 10 inch subs). A ported subwoofer tuned to a very low frequency will give you flat FR outside of car, but peaky in the low frequencies inside of car, if that's what you want. In the end, if you have a good equalizer capability you can boost the lows in the 20-30Hz region if you wish, as long as the subwoofer has the stroke and power headroom for this.

Have you ever actually compared predicted response to measured? I find it is quite accurate.
Not in a car. We use a base plot from (insert name of the program you use) then RTA the car and alter the enclosure to gain a flatter response. However, in some cases to get the best results an outside source(processor) is required to smooth off some of the bumps/nulls in the response.

The point is, if you know what nodes and anti-nodes your car produces ISD is very accurate from what I've measured.

... as 20hz is inaudiable however it'll cause body sensations.
Reall good sensations. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

Seriously though, my box is tuned around 35 hz. Seems like a great balance of all the music I listen to (mainly rap, hip-hop)

Agreed. Once you know know how your cabin gain effects things you can use WINISD for sealed and ported enclosures and have pretty good idea what you'll end up with.
