8" or 10" Sub?

I have factory speakers ('91 Lumina) and a Sony CD player. I want to add some bass to my car, but not a ton. I listen to punk music mostly so I do not need a 15" sub or something like that. I am looking for an 8" or 10" sub, (8" if you think it will suffice) and an amp.

A very important factor in my decision is MONEY. I don't need to spend a ton of money on a sub and amp, and I'm not looking for real high quality equipment. Just average stuff that will give my car a little boost in bass. If I could get this done for under $250 that would be excellent...The cheaper the better for me (not that I want garbage components).

Thank you very much for any input you can give me.

Welcome to the forums,

$250 for everything done (I assume you include installation and wiring) is pretty **** difficult. Do you know how to install yourself? that makes it a bit more reachable.

As for what sub is good for your application, I would recommend a 10" Elemental Designs K series: http://www.edesignaudio.com/ep/kseries.htm

or maybe something low-end JL Audio if you're into them

I also like Alpine Type R's. They can be had for a little over $100 on http://www.ikesound.com w/ free shipping. They can handle a lot of wattage -- a lot more than what Alpine declares recommended RMS.

If you take any of these subs, you will probably only need a couple hundred watts RMS. Maybe someone else can recommend an inexpensive amp for you.

Im sorry ppl but I have to recommend these:

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=piotsw254c

They may not be the best thing in the world but hes not lookin for the best stuff out there either. But by no means are these bad, trust me, I have two of the 12's and im the envy of alot of ppl. I can outbump alot of ppl at my school that are runnin big autotek amps and Rockford Punch he's. Im sure 1 of these 10's and this amp:

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=proca400m

If you dont like the sub at least take the amp. Profile is a very good brand of amp, I myself have one and have yet to get any problems out of it after 5 months of hard use.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Thanks for all the info!

Actually, my friend has a 15" Pioneer subwoofer just like the one that was linked and he likes it and it works well, so maybe that would be a good route to go. Can be bought for $27 on E-bay which seems like a pretty **** good deal to me (auction address http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3024197088&category=3291).

As for the amp, the Profile 400 was recommended and I like the price. One question though, get the 2-channel or the mono version? Advantages/disadvantages of each? Keep in mind I'm just gonna have the factory speakers (which actually sound pretty good IMO) and the 10" sub connected to the amp.

Such as?

It was recommended by several people and I'm not looking for a really great amp, just one that will power the TS-W254C well enough... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Jmac, can you please tell me why he should get a better amplifier. Have you had bad experiences or do you just not like Profile that much. The only reason everyone doesnt like Profile is cuz they just arent as popular as other brands. If you ask me Profile amps are very good amps for what you pay. But now thats only as long as you buy a California or Clarus amp, I dont think I would get one of their lower models. Then you might be hurting, allthough there are some peeps on here that have had Jam series amps before and liked them quite well.

I'd go with a single Alpine SWR-1041D subwoofer wired to present a 2-ohm load to an MTX 4250D mono brick amplifier. You should be able to pick these two components up for right between $250 and $300 if you shop wisely on EBay.

This does not include the cost of building or purchasing a box for the sub, or any of the supporting wiring / power distribution but it will give you clean, accurate, powerful bass on a budget.

Plus it meets the requirement of "For the love of god, get a better amplifier ..." as posted by JMAC. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Originally posted by Jmac I say going up to a US Acoustics USX2080 amplifier is a much better choice for the extra $8 that you pay over the Profile 400SX ($64.99 + $16.98 shipping = $81.97 ... The CA400 is not even a "Buy It Now" item, which means that you may end up paying even more than that. However, let's just say you get it for the minimum bid of $49.05 + $16.95 shipping ($66 total), do you still think it's a better deal than the USX2080 ? I don't ... I'd gladly pay $24 extra dollars for a better amplifier and a warranty (and a long term warranty at that) ..

I fail to see how the Profile is a better deal than US Acoustics ...
I'm leaning towards the U.S. Acoustics, thanks Jmac. I made a new thread under Amplifiers because that's what it's dealing with now... http://forums.caraudio.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30907.
