4ohm or 2ohm for my setup?

it doesn't sound any different at what ohm you run it at. it all depends on your amp. if your amp makes enough power at 4 ohms then you want a dual 2 ohm, if it supplies proper power at 2ohm, you want dual 4 ohm.

Whats the difference between running 4ohm and 2ohm? Should I run an Alpine type R that needs 500W for 425W @ 4ohm or 800W @ 2ohm, with the gain properly set in either scenario of course?

Ohm is just a measurement of resistantce in an electrical circuit. So the higher the ohm rating, the harder it is for a current to flow freely through the circuit. There is no audible difference between ohm loads.

But, in your case, those Type R's have been known to take some power... I would run it at 2 ohms, and set the gain to put out around 600-700wRMS.
