4 12s in a wall

you don't want to spend 400 on subs, but you want to spend 200-300 dolalrs on wood and other materials?
its going to add up to it hence why the cheapness of subs lulz.

find me two of my bxi's and we can consider the 4 on the backseat

Walls are intended to seal off a section of the vehicle not needed (or wanted) to have the airspace compressed. Any intention to push that definition beyond that boundary, including discussing budgets or cone area, is irrelevant. Just ask Nate Munsen if you need X amount of cone area to justify a wall (hit 169.7db with a single 10, in a wall install).

What vehicle, power, frequency, mic location?

either way it's impressive, but I doubt tony is shooting solely for a burp machine...

to expand on what I said, I don't feel like walled vehicles are practical daily drivers. but that's just me... I could fit four 18's with ample airspace without walling, so It really is my last option, imo

Nate's was just a burp machine, I didnt mean to imply otherwise. As far as your questions on the install, it was an SUV iirc, but the rest Ive forgotten by now. The mic was an AC mic iirc, but still, at the time the world record was in the mid 170's, so a 169.7 with a single 10 was a real eye opener for the entire SPL competition scene. Im a bit surprised you dont remember Nate's score, it became quite famous pretty quickly.

The sub was a DD9510 btw, but he also did a drop-in replacement with several other subs including a W7 and got within a couple db of what the DD did. It was he, and that install, that truly showed people how important install is is versus equipment used. Of course, again, this was simply for burping where raw pressure is the goal, not a wide useable bandwidth of freqs for music where equipment becomes a bigger factor.

I might not have been active or entirely aware of the whole SPL scene when that happened... It's just my personal opinion that walls should be reserved for show vehicles, db drag vehicles, and other competitive cars. In my mind, I doubt I'll ever see a wall that is a practical daily driver.

Walls arent just advantageous for SPL.

When you add subs in your trunk, sound wave reflections tend to skyrocket (as opposed to direct radiating speakers inside the passenger compartment), and coloration of the sound increases. This is not to say that walls do not add their own problems/considerations, they do. Like all things car audio, there is no one definitive answer, perfect install type, or ideal speaker.
