I'm not advocating denouncement of the Holocaust. Just that I personally think limiting someone's freedom of speech in such a [manner] is too extreme. That's as Socialist as the forces they were fighting against.

First off - it's nice to have a real O/T discussion without all the ePenis comparos. +1 for you.

I deeply value freedom of speech as previously stated but to a degree wouldn't it be a matter of nothing more than perspective? If our own history was very different than it is then the freedoms and laws given and enacted in our own little corner of the world could potentially be very different than they are. The US was founded by a group fighting the oppressions visited upon them by tyrannical leaders. At innumerable times folowing that we were fighting for one reason or another either with others or amongst ourselves. Take our 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms - many people (and/or other nations as a whole) find the fact that any American over the age of 21 without a criminal history can buy a handgun absolutely insane! (take Australia for example...) Well, as they grew up a bit differently than we did I reckon they are allowed their point of view but I will continue to disagree with it. Americans, for the most part, embrace the right to firearm ownership completely regardless of the rest of the world's impressions of it.

The blatant abscence of the freedom of speech exhibited by Austria may be a completely foreign concept to us as citizens of a country that does things a bit differently - but that's not to say that it isn't the right thing for them. (Again - I'm not advocating that the decision made by the powers that be in Austria was the correct one - but I'm allowing that a different point of view as the result of very different historical experiences may exist)

The new president of Iran has also said publicly that one of his overall goals is to see that Israel gets wiped of the global map permanently.

With that in mind I can see where he wouldn't think that the mass elimination of millions of Jews as well as others was a big deal....
