2011 Accent - Help with lights in OEM radio.

I have a 2011 Hyundai Accent GL that comes 'radio ready'. I'm installing a 2008 Hyundai/Kia radio that's a drop in fit except for the plug.

On my work bench the LCD display lights up, but the buttons/knobs don't. These consist of 24 to 30 (?) little LEDs and I doubt they're all burned out.

My Question Is... is the button/knob illumination separate from the LCD display? In other words, the LCD lights up (backlit) when power is applied even if headlights are off, but the buttons don't. This is without Illumination wire being connected.

Maybe if someone here owns a 2006 to 2011 Accent with a factory radio they can tell me if the LCD screen is lit even when the headlights are Off.

Your not likely to find a lot of answers to this because that's a very vehicle specific question. Why did opt to buy an OEM radio though? There's so many aftermarket decks that would have provided you with much better options than the stock. In any case, don't judge the radio's performance until you have ALL the wires connected, like you mentioned the illumination wire, it's possible that needs to be connected for the rest of the lights to turn on.

I went with an OEM because it was $13 including shipping, in perfect shape, DDIN and had everything she wanted in a radio (Cass, am/fm, CD, MP3). These OEM radios are pretty decent units.

The car is for my daughter to commute to Med School for the next 4 1/2 years - about 70 miles a day. We thought we'd have to get a used car, but I got the 2011 Accent GL (with AC) for $7995. AC is the only option available on the new GL trim, and it's the only option she cared about. It's got the gas mileage we hoped for and it's fun to drive. Basically, we're doing this as cheap as possible (within reason).

It's looks like I'll have to try the wiring again. I'm using a Metra 70-7303 to plug into the new Accent and a 71-1004 to plug into the radio. The Accent plug has a + Illumination, but the 70-7303 plug doesn't pick it up (the spot is blank). The -Illumination (dimmer) is connected on both plugs. I'll just run a wire from the +Illumination on the car to the +Illumination (orange wire) on the 71-1004 (radio side). Hopefully that'll do it.

Thanks for your help. Wish me luck.

Gary
