Knockin Doors Down
Well i just bought a bnib sundown 125.2 off a member here on the forum and it got here yesterday and just hooked it up today.

its running at 2 ohms on each channel to two pairs of orion hcca 1" silk domes.

i have the gain set only to about 1/4 and they are very loud.

however after hooking them up and rolling around for about 15-20 minutes i got back home and popped the trunk the amp was so hot i could bearly touch it.

any input?

Is the amplifier getting any kind of air flow at all, or is sealed off in the corner of the trunk?

It's hot outside man, and when you use the shit out of an amplifier(whether it has fans or not...although they help) it's going to get hot. They shouldnt get burning hot to the touch by anymeans...

Once again, does it have any air coming through? Is it in a tight area? Did it sit out in the sun all **** day and then you went out beatin on her?

its just mounted right in the middle of the trunk, im still waiting on my 40.1 to get here to make a amp rack for both of them...

i don't have a voltage meter but i think the voltage is fine.

but i just thought about something my batts have been in my car for 2 weeks and i just hooked them up to the main battery today so maybe they drained out?

Sounds like something could be wrong with it. Doesn't matter if it was new or used that is beside the point. I would park somewhere shaded, with the amp cold, turn it on, let it play at low volume and put your hand on it. If it goes from cold to hot in only a matter of 2 - 3 minutes then something is definately wrong with it.

you got a warranty for it?

even if you dont i would play the shit out of it and see if you can get it to blow. i bet it will take a while and it may never blow but if its working properly but just getting hot, no use fixing something thats not broke right? crank it up...

yeah the dude i bought it from also sent the original receipt, it was bnib so i don't believe he ever even had it hooked up.

im going to get a voltage meter today to see if that could be the problem.

Under a trunk lid an amp will get hot just sitting there - I had a black Civic trunk and the amps were hot enough to burn my hand without even playing.

If it's not shutting off chances are it's not TOO hot, though.

Maybe you cant explain for copyright/whatever reasons but how does the thermal sensor shut off the amp (put into protect). What is it monitoring the temperature of? The FETs?

The thermal sensor is screwed down to the heatsink. It is a variable resistor. When it get's hot, the internal resistance of it either goes up or down (cannot remember now) and when it reaches a certain resistance it triggers a small transistor to turn on, and when that transistor turns on it tells the main IC in the amp (KIA494 in that amp) to shutdown. When shutdown occurs, pins 9 and 10 stop putting out the square wave drive signal to the power supply and the amps shuts down and the protect LED comes on.

Black amps will heat up in the sun period. We have to keep a competitor customer of mines amps in the shade during comps because they are mounted in the bed of the truck, exposed to direct sun, and just a few minutes of sitting in the sun (they are black) they are hot as hell to the touch.
