so earlier i got done installing my new rear deck speakers. they've been playing fine for the whole time. jl btw. i might have not noticed it before but im not sure but i hear a crackling noise sorta like static. i can hear the brakes and the motor through it. im not sure if this is what any of you consider ''engine whine'' like i read about alot on here. i installed an equalizer and just got done hooking it up and i think maybe that might have caused the rear deck speakers to make the sound? im not exactly sure. at first i thought oh crap maybe i blew the tweeters in them but it became obvious once i hit the brakes. so tomorrow im going to unhook the ground for the equalizer and see if i hear it as bad. if i dont do i find a new spot for a ground for that? if i still hear it could it be caused because i have two amps grounded on different sides of the car?

Check your grounds...also be advised that EQ's are a bit "old school" nowadays what with the parametric EQ's built into most aftermarket HU's...and also know that an external EQ can introduce all sorts of noise into an otherwise quiet system.

Are you insinuating that "old school" is a bad thing? My 25+ year old amps work fine. My new Alpine HU (CDA-9886) can't hold a candle to my old 7337 cassette deck. I miss my old EQ that I could easily adjust while driving. Menus and crap aren't too user friendly while driving. I'll take knobs and sliders (LOTS of 'em) over this new school crap.

i dunno man; it might just be that i was around long enough to have used "old school" stuff. but all the h/u eqs iv used are pretty easy; usually just push the volume knob in to select what you wanna tweak; then turn the volume knob.... seems pretty straight forward... but i dunno maybe others are more confusing

well not to get off topic but on my headunits equalizer it has pretty much everything so i can set any of the settings to any hz or khz. its pretty cool compared to my last deck where it was just a basic -6-0-6+ setting but id rather not go through the troubles and redo everything and wait for it to save in the memory when another artists songs might sound crappy with that specific eq so thats why i sorta got this equalizer to make things easier. im gnna go ahead and redo my grounds tonight to see if that fixes the problem.

Exactly, I miss basic bass and treble settings with a simple knob (push in for bass). Two knobs with 6 functions (including the "collars") are much easier to use than a rotary encoder/menu system. I never had to take my eyes off the road to adjust anything. I now "let her ride" with less than optimal settings. I refuse to be the blonde on the cellphone. "I was just adjusting my crossover frequency on page 6 of the menu when you happened to pull onto the roadway. Its clearly not my fault that I assholed you, the Alpine owner's manual outlines the necessary steps and I was reading it when you caused me to hit you." I also really like the remote. I assume the batteries fit. The stereo is above my right knee, as close as any other controls in my truck. I have no remote for my headlights or defroster and have very little trouble reaching them. I change heat settings and actually aim vents with my hands and fingers. WTF are these "engineers" thinking when they "design" this crap? I suppose it has something to do with being raised with a Nintendo (Playstation, Wii, whatever) remote in their hands. Pages of menus just plain ****. I'm sure it's cheaper to have just one rotary encoder versus several ganged pots. Progress isn't always in the positive direction. My circa 1984 Alpine 7337 may well go back in (with actual EQ) soon.
