10” for EDM sub recommendation, lots of questions

Hello I’m interested in a recommendation for:

  • single 10” subwoofer and amp
  • in Hyundai Palisade (Mid Size SUV)
  • I like aggressive EDM and hip hop
  • I know I want a sealed box
  • I’m shooting for SQ, but I’m not the level of an audiophile, and dont expect to customize EQ settings beyond a basic bass control knob
  • I plan on using the stock infotainment system with active LOC
  • Budget $1000 for sub and amp
  • Goals: enjoy my music by myself when I’m driving home from work to relieve stress. I want a clean, sharp, punchy beat, that quits quickly for the silent white spaces of the music.

The last time I was looking at car audio was in 2014, and I decided on double 12” IDQs powered by an old Nakamichi PA-1500, with a DIY 3/4” MDF baffled sealed box, and to me, that system was an absolute DREAM. I have since sold all that after I had my first child, and low key regret it, but I think that set up is overkill for me now and I’ll need more trunk space.

I’m not loyal to any particular brand, but I definitely appreciate products that punch above their weight. ChatGPT recommended JL audio, but the consensus on this forums is that they are overpriced.

  1. what sub driver and amp should I get?
  2. Has Image Dynamics kept its quality without being overpriced? I was considering IDMax. If that’s solid, should I go for D2 or D4?
  3. Is there any value in getting the sub and the amp from the same manufacturer? In other words, are there combinations of equipment that go well together because they were designed or tuned to work with each other?
  4. What cubic ft of the sealed box should I buy? anyone recommend a vendor? i wont have time to make the box this time around
  5. is it a bad idea to secure fix the box to the bottom of the truck with velcro? i know it’s best to secure it with bolts but i want the option to remove the box easily when i need the trunk space
  6. should i have the sub fire upwards?
  7. is $1000 unnecessary for what I want, considering I’m sticking with a stock head unit and a LOC? do I even need to spend this amount of money or is there a better sweet spot for bang for my buck?

Subwoofer Recommendation

1. Subwoofer Selection: Given your budget and the desire for a single 10” subwoofer that delivers clean, punchy bass suitable for EDM and hip-hop, the Image Dynamics IDMax is indeed a solid choice. It’s known for its excellent sound quality and ability to handle power effectively.

null.

2. Amplifier Selection: Look for an amplifier that can provide at least 500-800 watts RMS at the impedance you choose. A good match for the IDMax would be something like the Rockford Fosgate R500X1D or the Kicker 46CXA8001. Both of these amplifiers are well-regarded for their reliability and performance in delivering clean power.

System Compatibility

3. Brand Compatibility: While it’s not necessary to have the sub and amp from the same manufacturer, some brands do design their products to work well together. If you go with Image Dynamics for the sub, consider pairing it with an amp from a reputable brand like Rockford Fosgate or JL Audio for synergy in performance.

Enclosure Specifications

4. Sealed Box Volume: For a single 10” sub like the IDMax, a sealed enclosure typically ranges from 0.5 to 1.0 cubic feet. Check the specifications for the IDMax for the recommended volume, but generally, 0.75 cubic feet is a good starting point.

5. Box Vendor: You can find pre-made boxes from vendors like SubThump or CarAudioFabrication that specialize in custom enclosures. Make sure to specify the dimensions based on the recommended volume for the IDMax.

Installation Considerations

6. Securing the Box: While securing the box with Velcro is convenient for removal, it may not provide the best stability and sound quality. If possible, consider using quick-release bolts or L-brackets that allow for easy removal while still securing the box adequately.

7. Sub Orientation: Firing the sub upwards can enhance the sound dispersion in an SUV like the Palisade, but it depends on your trunk layout. If space allows, experiment with different orientations (upward, rear-firing) to see which gives you the best sound.

Budget Considerations

8. Is $1000 Necessary? Given your goals, $1000 is a reasonable budget for a solid sub and amp combo. You could potentially spend less, but investing in quality components will yield better performance and longevity. If you want to save, consider looking for deals or slightly less expensive options that still meet your needs.

Conclusion

To summarize, consider the Image Dynamics IDMax (D2 or D4 based on your amp choice) paired with a solid amplifier like the Rockford Fosgate R500X1D. A sealed box around 0.75 cubic feet will work well, and look for vendors that can provide a quality enclosure.

If anyone has additional recommendations or insights, please chime in! Your experiences and suggestions could be very helpful.

Don't forget to factor in appropriate-gauge power wire, inline fuse or fuse block, ability to connect wiring to battery, interconnects to get from LOC to sub, inline gain control (I think the suggested amp has a bas knob that controls a bass boost EQ, and not simply gain).

If you want SQ, maybe consider a calibrated microphone to connect to your PC, so you can measure your frequency response with free software (like REW), and dial it it all in.

Instead of velcro or having to drill & screw brackets, any hardware in the back for securing cargo with straps? Could just strap that box down, and remove it in 5 minutes if you need space.

For a palisade I would definitely consider a 12" cabin in the palisade is quite large

My go to woofer is the stereo integrity sql series
The idmax will perform fantastic aswell
Although sql will dig deeper when it needs to

Luckly amplifiers aren't as critical when it comes to sq for subs
You can save a few bucks there if need be
But a good 1000w rms at whatever ohm load you will be wired too would be ideal

Are you changing all the speakers in the car or just adding the subwoofer? If just adding a subwoofer then overpowering the rest of the stereo could be an issue.

Honestly, a trip to Walmart could cure this urge with a Kicker 10" and appropriate Kicker amp. Get a good enclosure and proper amp kit, call it a day until you get bored and want to upgrade again.

Ah man, lots to consider. I think I really need to experience someone's ported sub to see if I prefer that, but in general I prefer crisp beats over diffuse bass.

I think I'd be ok to sacrifice half my trunk space. I can just put costco groceries on top of the box if I'm firing upward, and not play music on the way home.

I'll look into anchor points for straps, and I think there has to be some quick disconnect options for this. Like the cases expensive turn tables come with, there's some kind of metal buckle that cinches down. Does anyone have these?

Those miscellaneous expenses I'm not worried about, but I hadn't heard of inline gain control, that's cool. I'll research the calibrated microphone, but it may be over my head.

I'm keeping factory door speakers, as they sound good enough to me. Obviously it'd be better if I changed those too, but I wanna keep it simple for now, and just add some bass without having to do the big 3 upgrade. Maybe do sound deadening professionally later down the line.

I'm thinking I don't need bass that intense, but who knows, maybe I'll get greedy and change my mind later. I'm new to EDM and like R&B and Hip Hop originally. I think I can get my SPL fix at festivals tbh.

Is there any mono amp that would be equivalent to a Nakamichi PA1500 for one 10" Sub Driver? I really liked the sound out of that one.

Rockford Fosgate is quality brand now? I think when I did my research back then, I think people on the forums were skeptical because of new ownership or something. I can't remember though.

Just know that a lot of car audio brands, even the really good one's have products made in China. Doesn't mean it is bad, just be aware. RF still makes good stuff. From entry level to high end.

Inline gain is the best since slice bread, if you listen to a variety of music, as opposed to full compilations. Music mastering is so varied, it's real handy to be able to dial in your subs on-the-fly.

A calibrated mic and REW can help make a huge difference, and it's not terribly complicated. Well worth the learning curve (which is not that steep, thanks to the internet).
