I have a 1978 Porsche 911 as my fun car. In the front doors are Polk Audio DB652 shallow mount 6.5 coax. I'm driving them with the front channels of a JBL Stadium 4 amplifier which provides 100 watts RMS at 4 ohms. The Polk's handle 100 watts RMS and they are 4 ohm.

For bass duty I'm using a JL Audio 10tw1-4 loaded enclosure (JL CP110LG-TW1-4) being ran off of the rear channels of the JBL Stadium 4 which provides 240 Watts RMS bridged at 4 ohms. I'm using this enclosure due to being able to easily remove it for extra space when needed for road trips. The bass output is adequate for my needs.

I would like to remove the Polk DB652's and replace them with an upgraded shallow mount coax. I have about 1 3/4 mounting depth available. If the speaker is any deeper, the window will hit the speaker when its being lowered.

I have the ability to add 1/2 inch spacers to allow for a slightly deeper coax but would prefer not to. The speakers will also need to include grills as the speakers mount to the doors instead of behind the door panel. I do not want to modify/cut the doors.

Why do I want an upgrade? The interior of the car is LOUD while driving. The exhaust has been upgraded with stainless headers and sport muffler. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of the Flat 6 engine but sometimes, I want to crank the audio while driving "spiritedly".

I would like to allocate around $200.00 to the front door speakers. I can use the JBL Stadium 4 in bridged mode to provide 240 watts RMS to each speaker if needed and then use another JBL amp I have available to drive bass (JBL Stadium 600). If $200.00 isn't feasible for the door speakers, I can adjust funds accordingly.

Loudness over sound quality "may" be the best route to go in my scenario so, what do you folks suggest?

I've really liked the JBL Stadium series components, not sure if the mounting depth is going to make it, but Harmon International products have always done right by me and if you like the amp, you could stick with them.

Polk hasn't been a strong name in the business since before Mark Wahlberg was a boy band so I don't suppose it would be too tough to get somewhat of an upgrade from them, but do have reasonable expectations out of anything billed as "shallow mount". They almost invariably come with a tradeoff of some low frequency extension.

Might want to call up Crutchfield and see if they have any other suggestions of what fits in your door locations. If you're 200$ and up budget anything in that price tier should sound nice.

Thanks for your reply hispls.

I'm not too worried about losing low frequency extension from my door speakers as the car is so loud inside while driving I wouldn't hear it. I'm looking for something more on the loud side to cut through the beautiful sounding flat 6 engine when I crank up the speed on the twisty roads. On the flip side while at car cruise ins and shows I do appreciate some good sounding tunes. I guess I'm looking for a combination SPL/SQ door speaker that has no more than about 2 inches of mounting depth. Hmmmm. This may not be worth the trouble of swapping out the Polk DB652's.

Alternately, sound deadening the interior will lower road noise and make your audio sound louder, of course if you like to hear the scream of your engine sometimes that's probably a non-starter.

I may actually look more into the sound deadening option. It would certainly reduce road noise yet still allow the engine sound to be heard. Great idea. Thanks!

I've decided to go ahead and keep the Polk DB652's in the front doors. The car has provisions for 4x6's in the rear deck. I'm going to add some and power them off of the JBL Stadium 4. I'm not too worried about destroying the soundstage while hooning the car and as such I'll play the front's and rears at volume while driving fast-ish. When driving gently, I'll fade the rear fill out and enjoy a better front sound stage.

Well, generally speaking, I would agree. But that is like saying that PRV, Stetsom and Taramps are all the same. Similar maybe, but not the same...

It is an L port. You might as well add three 45's. Add one by the leg of the L and the two that I showed you in my other post.

Thank you both :) I'll probably wait it out for the SA-12 v.2s in that case. Always learning on this forum and I appreciate it so much as always!

It was also 1960 and the quality of sound you could get out of the loudspeakers of the day was going to be rather anemic even given optimum...

If the company made the adapter for your specific model, they would have taken into account the OEM amplifier and put in a sort of line output...
