SA Classic-10

ok, I know I'm going to get some blow back for this because that's all I see when this topic is discussed. I'm upgrading my old sound in my truck. Im not new to car audio, but I'm not super well versed in it either. I'm also not an idiot. Im a carpenter. I can build boxes all day till one works if I have to. Ive had subs in it forever; 2- Boston acoustic g2-10's, just thrown in the back in a big ported box cancelling out the use of 2/3 of the back seat. I built a sealed box for them just to see how small a box I could fit and make work and they actually sounded decent, I just want a little more power. I also want to open up the other seat. I like the sealed box sound. That's what I want to stick with. So, I just got a Sundown Audio SA Classic 10. Everybody says it's a waste to have them in a sealed box. Oh well, that's what I got. That's what I'm trying to make work. I'm not interested in a ported box. I have a 4 year old. Im not trying to blow the doors off. SA suggests .5 cu ft for sealed. First attempt, I made one at .64, that's with displacement, and there's almost nothing. The sub is moving. There's bass, but it's very weak. If I crank the volume, I get more but I get an unpleasant noise with it as well. I'm running it on an old Alpine pdx 1000.1 amp @ 2 ohms. I know these subs can handle more, even though they're 750W rms. I plan on upgrading the amp soon but that's what I have for now. So, I'm lookin for suggestions on the box size to help me out. I have more space. Im building the box to take up just the center seat. Do I make it a little bigger? .7? A lot bigger? Try polyfil? Is it the amp? Please don't suggest different subs or a ported box. I get it. This is what I have and what I will make work. Appreciate any help I can get. Until then I'm going to keep building different boxes and trying different parameters until I like one. Thanks in advance.

On my nephew's truck I installed 2 SA10s in a sealed 1 cu ft per side underseat box. It sounded loud but was lacking detail. I told him I could modify (divider panels) the box to Sundown's specifications. The subs came alive in the 0.5 net volume. The bass tightened up and blended great with the PA style front stage. So I say the volume should remain. Your issue may have to do with speaker placement. Try aiming them towards a hard surface. On this box I had to use spacers to let them breath and it helped. Now that I think about it, I should have used a 1/8" plywood panel over the carpet as an offloading wall.

Why didn't you try the.5?? Do you think the amp may be the problem??? Are your filters set correctly??

did you wire it correctly...

did you set the amp gain correctly. the correct test tones are at the very bottom...

Good question. And thanks for the reply. All the info I gathered on this topic lead me to believe you can add up to 20% more box volume for a boost in... something, (I can't remember 100% tbh). I picked a happy medium and added 10%. I thought that was a good starting point. No other reason honestly. I have a shop with lots of leftover material. I can make a box in 30 mins so. If I was off it's nothing to whip another up.
The reason I mention the amp is because when I had it hooked up to the BA 10's, I got in one day and it seemed to play with like 10% less power for some reason. I recently adjusted the gain and it sounded great for a couple weeks then it was just different. I didn't measure the difference in any way. I'm just goin on my ears. I could be imagining it, but I'm pretty dialed in. I think I can notice a change. So the amp is on the same settings now for the SA 10 that it was with the BA's. I haven't touched it yet. So I believe the filters are correct. Not 100%.

Thanks for the response. I just made a new box at .5. I haven't listened to it yet to see what it's done to the sound. Right now It's sitting on the middle seat aimed up at the roof. I figured that was a harder surface than the back of the seat by a little at least, but I can move it around to see if it changes. What are spacers and where do you put them?

It's a DVC-4 sub wired in parallel to 2 ohms. The wiring is correct. The amp I set up with a multimeter. I don't have another way of doing it right now. It worked well for the Boston Acoustics which took much less power than the SA Classic does. I haven't changed any amp settings yet but I'll work with it a little bit with the new box and see what I can do.
