would you do: 2 Shiva 12s or 1 Koda 10?

Sorry, I have to add some questions too.

1. nosaj070- I don't doubt you. You are taking a top-of-the-line 15 and comparing it with a cheap 12. Of course it'll sound better.

2. swimfreak26- you say you went from 2 12s sealed to one 15 ported. What 12s did you have and what 15 do you have now? Because if you bought a 15 that's much better quality, it takes away the credibility of the 12 vs. 15 debate.

3. OLD_SCHOOL- Will it sound much different in the truck of my 626? Would 1 tempest still be good? Because that would probably save some money over 2 shivas if it sounds as good as a shiva and hits harder (than one shiva, that is, especially if ported). And what makes you say to send "very little power (400W)" to the subs? Do you mean 400 is plenty for anyone or that I should play it safe and keep the power low incase I do something stupid like too much bass boost or something? Also, what music do you listen to with your shiva?

4. slick rick- what kind of box do you have your shivas in?

5. Here's a question for everyone, but aimed at OLD_SCHOOL because I know he's good with boxes and he suggested it to me: Here's my thoughts. If I go sealed, I can probably build the box myself. It can't be too hard right? I have my dad to help me. But ported boxes are a whole 'nother thing. Learning from the diagrams at RE's site, I now know what a ported box looks like, but it seems like it'd be a biotch to make. What do you suggest? I have a vague idea of how it goes together, but it looks tough. Should I just go buy some 3/4" MDF and make a weekend out of it to see what I can do?

Thanks for all your help, this is one of the most informative threads I've participated in. Now don't forget my buddy Hundreth here who asked a question before me:

How would one RE SE 10" compare with one Koda 10" in terms of SPL? I know the Koda will probably whip it in SQ, but i wonder which hits harder considering one uses half the power and costs more.

the power limit of 400 watts is because thats all they can handle mechanically in a ported box the size you want to have for the tempest and you still have to be carefull, and all they need to sound good. i think it would do just as well in your 626 as in the cab of my Dakota. it is my plan to do a blow through and move them to the bed so in essence it will be similar to your trunk.

i listen to all types of music from country to techno and the 15 gets low and sounds great in a low tuned box the low end response is sick

ported is just as easy as sealed box's when you have a good set of plans. and i can make those plans for you if you want. the only thing your gonna do differant is cut the front shorter than it normally would and add a port wall or 2 nothing to it. you just need to make sure your cuts are right and correct.

I have seen about 3-4 OLD_SCHOOL's box plans.

There nice and detailed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

I trust that my dad can make good cuts. He's good with his hands (he's 46; a few years of experience). And thanks for the offer. I'll come back to you for plans when I make my final decision (I'm slow to make decisions). And I'll make sure not to go over 400w if I decide on the ported tempest, which looks like a really good idea right now. Thundering lows, good SQ and a huge woofer and box to make it pound. Plus it's only one sub, so that saves money.

And out of curiousity, do you plan to put your subs in your bed, closest to the cab with an opening between the cab and bed? With the subs facing the tailgate? What does it sound like when the tailgate (which bounces all the bass back at you) is so far away? I know it's not an 8-foot bed we're talking about, but it's no compact trunk either.

He is also very correct! It's a myth. Take a cvr 10, 12, and 15. Play them in a good enclosure. They will have the same punchiness, and as you go up in size. The larger - 15 will most likely be louder due to increased sd.(cone area) And also it may play a lot lower/deeper. But in reality - it all comes down to the install!

I'd go with that Tempest if I were you. My ported Tempests have better SQ than my sealed 10" Comp VRs...not to mention they seem to be like 3x as loud. Only downside, like Old school said, is the box size. Mine have about 6.5 cu. ft. per chamber.

Oh I do. I listen to all advice. Ignoring it would be defeat the purpose of me asking. I appreciate any info I can get my hands on (or eyes, in the case of the internet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif ).

You beat me to it mike, I meant to say that the XXX15 would most likely sound better than the XXX10 due to displacement and playing lower and deeper, just like DB said. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

so what is it that people like about 10s then?

Some poeple believe in the myth that 10's are audibly 'faster' than larger subs. Some use them because they are the largest they can or chose to accomodate in their vehicle. Others chose them simply (and smartly) because 10's match their front stage well.

too slow!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Thats what everyone always told me when I was a kid! I never understood it to this day //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

What is the point in that? I obviously don't want to pay for high-dollar subs like that at all. I don't see where high-dollar subs like W7's are in the "subject" at all.

i am cutting the bed andback wall and facing them forward and then sealing off the area betwen the front of the bed and back of the sub box flush with the bed top and that wall will double as a rack an xbox station with moniter
