i have two mtx subs that are rated at 200wrms each, 4 ohm subs in a closed enclosure. then i have a pioneer mono amp rated at 600wrms and some kenwood deck. i know its not the best system in the world but im hooking them up in my girlfriends car and she just wants some bass. so anyways will that amp overpower the two mtx subs?

thanks.

how will i know if there getting over powered? kinda new to car audio but i know the basics of hooking up a system

The sub will 'over travel' and bottom out (either the coil smacking the backplate, making a 'bang bang bang' noise, or ripping the suspension, dependiong on the speaker's design) or it will overheat to the point that it will stink, and then fail due to melting the voice coil. Basically I generally tell people to just listen and pay close attention to the speaker(s) when they are initially hooked up. If there's a serious problem, most people who pay attention, even novices, will realize it.

You could also simply use the DMM method of setting the gains to insure you have them set artificially low, thus limiting output of the amplifier. This is not a fool-proof method, but it will get you in the ballpark.

Cheers.

so this would acctully be a bad idea to hook up these subs to that amp? seeing the subs only need 400w rms and the amp has 600wrms

well im just saying if its going to melt my voice coil and stuff its not worth it, i do have a 2 channel amp that throws out 185 per channel so i might just do that for fear of ruining the subs

You won't ruin them. That amp is almost certainly rated at 14.4 volts. The car probably sits at 13.8. That means it won't push 600 rms. It actually sounds like a good combo. If it turns out to be too much power, then wire it up to 8 ohms.

she has a hyundai tiburon with the stock battery if that helps lol. and how would i wire something to 8 ohms? on the neg/pos plug on the box it says 4ohms.

It depends on the voice coils. I assumed by your original post that they're single 4 ohm's. If they are, then you can wire them down to 2 ohms or up to 8ohms. I can't see your equipment, so I have no idea how you can wire them.

More often than not, subs in that power range are single voice coil. So they probably are single 4 ohm subs.

Why would you recommend wiring them to 8 ohms, effectively cutting output by 75% (2ohm vs 8ohm), when the gain controls could be adjusted to create whatever power output is desired?

This isn't rocket science. If they bottom out or get stinky, turn the gains down till it stops.

The gain and LPF operate independantly from one another. The LPF should be set based on what the HPF of your comps (or midbass) is set at. Then adjust the gains to set output at a level that does not damage the speakers and blends the system together well.

I didn't recommend it.
