I cannot remember which month of Sport Compact Car that they had a turbocharged matrix, it was makin around 270 to the wheels w/ just the turbo kit and exhaust, spun the tires through 1st 2nd and 3rd gears, ran the q/m in around 13 secs. Two things here...if you are thinking that you can get 350hp at the crank on the Celica, I am sure you can, but you won't get that cheaply. It's going to cost SEVERAL thousands of dollars to get that. If someone else were to spend HALF of that to beef up an LT1 or LS1, they would get alot more than 400 hp at the crank and even with the weight diff it would be tough to beat. The old question comes into play...why spend twice as much on a 4 banger as you could on a V-8 and still not be as fast?

As far as the Matrix, let's see. The base model only has 130 hp at the crank. It would take several thousands (parts and labor) for the turbo and exhaust. 270hp at the wheels would be impressive at that but a stock 95-99 GST will spin the tires in the first three gears. One thing you are forgetting is the gearing in all this. The Matrix doesn't have the gear setup for quick times, you would have to change that too. In the 13s is respectable but stock V-8s can do that as well right now.

I'm sure you can build a 4 banger to be faster than my T/A. I would never say my car will eat any other 4 banger out there. I was just commenting that for spending that much money, you could have that much more. The guys with stock V-8's aren't going to be running you down to race you anyway, it's the one's with a little more that will want to give you the run, and they are the ones you will have to worry about.

I'm talking about the Matrix/Celica VVTL-i engine, the 180 HP 1.8 liter engine. And the only upgrades to the Matrix were, a complete turbo kit, (around 4 g's) and a greddy exhaust (6-700 bucks). and rims.. but i don't consider those upgrades.

yes, it is expensive, but it is cool, cooler than beefing up a V-8 imo. I have abs. nothing against V-8 performance, i'd just rather have a turbo, or maybe a supercharged 4 banger.

 
As much as I am gonna be shredded on for this i am gonna post on this. I like ricers i think they are kinda phat except tha asian writing, and tha picknick table on tha bacl. othert than that i like them. I am tryiong to get a 97 cavaleer. i wanna ddo some rice/lowrider mods. i wanna airbag it, and put a small spoiler on it, and do some decals but no steal me stickers. Tinted windows, rims, and naturally a phat system.

Well corsica here is the deal. Keep the jap writing and steal me stickers off the car and roll with it. Just make sure you do not add on the auper weedeater muffler and you should be fine. At least the car is american LMAO

Well, one other important factor left out...the VVTL engine does have 180 hp but it only has 135 ft lbs of torque, which is ONLY 5 more than the regular 130 hp engine. Don't ask me why that is, because that was all Toyotas doing. It doesn't make sense to me either. That torque is the low end, get out of the hole power you need...the extra 50 HP from the VVTL engine at the high end of the RPM scale won't help much in the quarter.

I respect your desires to beef up the 4's, don't get me wrong. I just think imo, you can always speed less and have more with a V-8. Man, there nothing like hearing a good ol' 350 with a Paxton on it, whining and all, like it's a jet fixing to take off! Well you can do tha and maybe even faster if you go to your local Army Surplus store and see if they can get their hands on a JATO pack. If they can not find one your local military installation shoul dbe able to provide you with one if you sneak on and get it yourself. LOL Now bolt it on to the car fill it with a heavy deisel and set the ignition. Once you have it all set and prepper find the longest stretch of road you can possibly get that is mostly straight, since you will not be able to turn very well, and take off. One last step of precaution tho. Watch for any trees or sides of mountains as the last guy that tried this ended up about 25feet inside a mountain.
