it was cool

i would love to visit

lots of things to do if you hang with the right people
are teh people generally cool with the Americans?

How hard is it not speaking a word of korean?

I assume you were stationed there and were able to kick it with other Americans, would it be as simple to find people to meet if i wasnt in the army?

Korea is very much a third world country. HORRIBLE hospitals and hotels that will scare the hell out of you.

Once you are used to the surroundings, it isn't that bad. If you get hurt, you need to get out of there. VP at my company was there and his point of contact had a heart attack. At the hospital they just left the guy (with the heart attack) in the hallway with a bunch of other people. The execs are always saying that if they get hurt, they need to be flown out (they mean it).

They do have high tech showers and toilets, but no one can figure them out and we are too ashamed to ask for help.

The people are very respectful and some of the scenery is beautiful. I would suggest doing it. It will be a shock at first, but I think you can handle it.

I'm totally going to do it if i can figure out how and get accepted.

I like checking out other places and after living where i do now.. i figure i could make it just about everywhere...south D is pretty much a third world country..

I think i could handle the strange place and customs part just fine.. the biggest drawback is going from living on my own to living in the dorms... but i think i could handle it..

most of the older people are extremely friendly....especially the ones who know what we did to win the Korean War. The younger Koreans are not so friendly....at least the idealistic anti-american types, altho many younger ones are also very welcoming. I had a korean girlfriend, so her and i plus some of my friends dated some of her friends so we traveled the country, went lots of places off the beaten path. Around military bases its all bars, *****s and shopping....get away from that scene and Korea has alot to offer. Its very helpful to have a native speaker as a friend or girlfriend

Sure they could, they just don't want to.
How? subsidies? The price per barrel is still the same...just different people pay for it.

I guess we can invade the whole middle east, execute everyone so no one can blow up the infrastructure...

So yeah, I guess. But without huge subsidies or spending on wars or something, they can't.

What are they gonna use ethanol? Do you realize how much water it wastes?

I don't disagree with your second point -- in fact, I feel very strongly that is almost criminal that we do not have the equivalent of the Manhatten Project to reduce our dependancy on fossil fuels.
However, I disagree with the notion that Congress is powerless to regulate the price of fuel. They lack the will, but not the power.
I don't think they can with the current American culture....seriously.

All the "magic" alt fuel vehicles aren't as sustainable...can't drive 90 mph on the interstate...etc

Those biodiesel fuels....the cars don't really go as fast...and then you have to worry about the "bio" part. The other componets are not free...

i dont know about the whole oil thing honestly.

Which country uses the most oil?
The United States comes in first place, with 20,730,000 bbl/day in 2004. That number is greater than the whole European Union, which used 14,680,000 bbl/day in 2004.
we are the oil companies biggest customers. im sure if we were to twist some arms to get a better price for the US, we could. now we would need a way to sustain ourselves a bit in order for this too happen. so maybe it is a lose/lose situation.

now take this with a grain of salt, i dont know how it all works, but this is my train of thought.

By the logic a crack head would get a better deal.

so a crack head comes up to you feining for another hit...do you raise the price or give him a discount?

if that crackhead stops coming around, i would lower the price to keep him hooked? i dont know, if a crackhead starts going somewhere else for his fix, im gonna lower my price.

hmm, maybe we can cut off certain oil companies from selling here, and give 1 of them the right to sell here. they can have exclusivity to the US for if they agree to sell a cheaper product. try to even out the price so they make a profit they like, but we get a decent price. couldn't this be used somehow to create more competition?

like i said flip, i dont know too much about the subject, its just an idea off the top of my head.

No, I don't think that my first choice would be to subsidize big oil. Silly focker.

I am afraid you missed my point. When I speak of needing a new Manhatten Project I am saying that we need to be innovative in finding a solution. I certainly was not saying that we already have the answer. No need to get a bunch of smart folks together to discuss current technology.
