Hunting is wrong because for no good reason it violates the most basic right of any living creature – the right to life. According to hunters, they only shoot animals who are surplus or excessive to the carrying capacity of the land or who are old or injured . They claim that their killing is done for humane and practical reasons, and that an untimely death by bullet or arrow is preferable to death from natural causes.

All of this presumes that animals who are killed or wounded by human hunters, endure less fear, stress and pain than those animals dying from natural causes, including predation.
So now all living things have rights! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif  //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif  //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

You had better be a Vegan

I want to start hunting humans. That will be fair atleast.
Well that's murder unless you are in the military....

but who said hunting was about fairness...

and when there are social rules there are other contests that don't kill people but still establish dominance... these are called sports...

It's more along the lines of this: If you aren't self-aware you can't feel pain or feel the loss of a "family member". Therefore shooting say a duck, is akin to smashing my computer, or breaking a cell phone...
However Dolphins, Elephants, Great Apes and maybe a handful of other animals (probably whales, maybe giant squid etc) ARE self-aware and therefore should not be hunted and their deaths should be avoided at any REASONABLE cost.
I believe ducks respond to stimuli. Whether they can illustrate they can respond to emotional stimuli is doubtful. I don't think a duck would have a response if it was showed pictures of ducks being slaughtered.

Would you think yourself great to smash a cell phone? Then why do hunters congradulate themselves for shooting a duck?

Because many refer to hunting as a sport.

As for the ducks yes they respond to stimuli but most living things do... self-awareness is my acid test for whether or not it's killable... if you don't know what YOU are you can't feel emotional trauma, or pain really. A duck might feel pain but it's more along the lines of the robot from lost in space (Danger Danger Danger) than the type of pain we feel as humans.

As for why hunt?

It takes a level of skill...

Besides, why do people congratulate themselves for installing neon lights under their civic, or being able to drink more than anyone else, or being able to start controversial threads on internet forums.... it's just that people get off in different ways. Some people like hunting, get off on it and do it again....

What animal has to die as a direct result of those hobbies.

Fairness isn't an inherent quality of sports, though most human vs. human sports tend to try to even the odds to make it more entertaining. This is why you won't find hunters tieing animals to stakes, taking a couple steps back and shooting them, it just wouldn't be any sort of a challenge. This is part of the reason I duck hunt, it's more challenging than big game (the shooting is, big game sucks because you have to find them... it can take days of wandering around seeing nothing)

Putting food out for them to eat and then shooting them when they do is justified? Where do you draw the line?

Is there a substitute to shooting ducks that would require an equal amount of skill without killing a duck?

To be honest with you I'd be just as happy with a camera as a gun, if I was any good with cameras... but since I'm better with a gun, and it doesn't really matter I take the shotgun...

Someday though, with some training and a nice SLR, I'd like to go out, decoy the ducks in and get some nice shots...

Sounds honorable.

The only thing I don't like about hunting is when people call it a sport without incorporating mechanisms for fairness.

Shooting a deer because you enjoy the taste of venison is completely appropriate.
