Listen to the 911 tape, the cops show up right after he shoots. They most likely would have been caught.
Nonetheless, even if they would have gotten away and the neighbor "would never see his stuff again" its only stuff and not worth a human life. The mothers of the dead robbers will never see their sons again, and over what, probably like a DVD player and a camera.

Thankfully we do not live in the Arab world where people are stoned to death for minor crimes. If you want that type of justice try moving to Iran.

Perhaps he was making a statement to other criminals that crime in his neighborhood will not be tolerated.

The life of a thief is worth less than a DVD player and a camera.

The camera and the DVD player have a function in our lives. The contribute to our history and our entertainment. What function do theives serve? What is their value in society other than to make those who run prisons rich?

I wonder if there where clear markers for boundariers?

Are they going to get a surveyor?

Could you spot on tell where a property line ends and begins in the dark? Could a reasonable person be expected to determine property lines in the dark while possibly in fear of life?

It would depend on how, and to what direction the theives ran out of the house.

He wasn't trying to protect his neighbors, he was trying to protect their stuff. There is a big difference between protecting human life and protecting a couple hundred dollars worth of consumer goods.

He should have listened to the 911 operator who begged him to stay inside and waited the extra 30 seconds for the cops to show up.
