The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported today that "total spending for U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and other activities related to the war on terrorism would amount to between $1.2 trillion and $1.7 trillion for fiscal years 2001 through 2017." With $705 billion in interest, the cost of the wars could amount to $2.4 trillion -- with $1.9 trillion in Iraq.
So i was thinking about the cost of war and wondering if for two trillion dollars if we couldn't have gone farther to achieve the purported goal of American safely by covert means instead of a public war.

It seems like the CIA was always meddling in world affairs back in the day. Toppling dictators, instilling puppet governments, and espionage, all seemed to play an important role in Americans domination after ww2. I think we could have been much better served by pouring two trillion dollars into covert programs to achieve the goal of protecting ourselves from Islamic fundamentalists.

Two trillion dollars is a lot of money. You could buy an entire orphanage of Arabs to train as spies and saboteurs, and still have plenty of money left. Also, this plan would have had the added bonus of allowing us to maintaining some shred of credibility on the world stage. On top of all of that, think of all the cool *** spy toys that would emerge from hundred of billions of dollars being spent on research and development.

In conclusion spies and shit are cool; the war sucks.

That's really not much considering the government takes in about 13 Trillion dollars annually.
I think you are getting the GDP and the federal budget confused.

The federal government doesn't take in even close to 13 trillion dollars a year.

A region's gross domestic product, or GDP, is one of the ways of measuring the size of its economy. The GDP of a country is defined as the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time (usually a calendar year). It is also considered the sum of value added at every stage of production (the intermediate stages) of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time.

I kept waiting for flip to chime in on this and pwn you, because he knows much more about this than i do, but i couldn't wait any longer.

if the US government is taking in 13 trillion dollars a year, and is spending less than 3 trillion a year, why do we have a federal deficit?

Yikes.... I was citing the GDP. That's what I get for posting while hopped up on cold medicine and a wee bit 'o brew. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

sounds pretty sensational when you say trillion. that amount is over the course of 16 years. hillary's socialized health care will cost more than that. you come up with a much less shocking number if you state it as a single year number. the war sucks, and so does our media's biased reporting.

The thing that scares me about this much money is its almost all deficit. We haven't even really started paying for it yet.

The thing that makes me laugh about this much money is that America as a whole reflects its people's financial irresponsibility. A little macro/micro action. Average person is in debt for far more than they should be, and if that debt was called at once they would totally implode. America is in debt to the world for far more than we should be, and if that debt was called at once we would totally implode.
