If I was in perfect health, then purchasing insurance is a waste of money. There ave been countless studies that prove this...
What purchasing insurance does is allow me to mitigate personal risks. I purchase insurance to mitigate the risk of smoking, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, etc. It simple fucking economics people. Shit
I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to NOT have health insurance, even if I am in good health.

Take my back for example. 4-5 months ago I was in perfect health, then all of a sudden I do something that causes me to herniate 2 discs in my back. It was nothing stupid, and it's something that I can't even remember doing.

Without insurance, I would be stuck with a $4000 hospital bill.

Even people in perfect health can benefit from health insurance because you never know what is going to happen. IMO, eventually it will justify itself. It may not be for a long period of time, but hell, I haven't even gotten a speeding ticket in 6 years but I'm forced to pay car insurance. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif (I know, different standards because other driver's are at risk, but you can see where I'm coming from)

but look at it this way. Cigarettes cause cancer in people WHO DON'T EVEN SMOKE!! How fair is that?

The purpose of insurance is to mitigate risk. The purchase of insurance allows a person to participate in a risky activity (skydiving, roller coaster, tec) and limit potential losses.

If a person buys insurance but encounters no risk, then it is a losing proposition. Like you said, you did something to hurt your back. What if a person did nothing? What if they lived in a bubble?

My point was that the purchase of insurance grants one the freedom to freely participate in those risks.

The same reason goes for life insurance. I cannot think of a single reason why an unmarried person would want life insurance....unless they wanted some particular funeral or something. Otherwise, it is a pointless excercise.

Ok, I agree with you.

At first I thought you meant insurance was just for people who take stupid risks that aren't necessary.

Having insurance gives me the freedom to do the things I would like to do/need to do. Correct?

Yes. That is my opinion of what insurance is for.

I wouldn't drive my car without insurance, that's for sure....the level of risk is just too high.
