Whoever said surface mount is better??? The only real advantage to surface mount is so its easier for the mfg to mass produce the amps. In no way is it higher quality than thru hole.

Ok generally im happy with my mid/tweet combo, except i wish it got louder. Anyways i like having both front and rear speakers, but i still crave more volume. Ive been thinking about adding horns. Maybe the ID cd1's. Would this possibly give me the volume i crave? What sort of amplification would be good for a set? Should i give them the full 75 watts they list on the ID specs or should i go for less? The only small amp i have laying around is an old ADS PS5.. i think its 15 watts per channel would that work or would i really need a new amp as well? What about using the 8454 to power them?

Everything in my sig is installed. The only other thing ive been thinking about is the PG ti elite 9" midbass, but finding the room would be a real bear, and would require moving both sets of 5.25s up front and making some door pods for the 9" in the rear doors (and for the front as well).

I guess im just looking for advice to get a little louder. Any suggestions?

Horns are a major commitment to do right. They require some forethought to be put into their installation, and require you to go fully active with some sort of EQ'ing to keep their levels down. You wouldn't use them along with seperate tweeters...

So basically i would be looking at totally scrapping my current set up and building from the ground up? Not sure im really up for all that, especially since my car really sucks. I just want louder. Ive thought about adding another 200.4 and bringing them both giving both front and rear 800 watts, but since RMS on the elites is 250 im afraid.

Should i just get over it and be happy until i get a better car im willing to put more effort into? At the end of summer i will be driving 120 miles round trip a day to school and im trying to get a stereo i will enjoy during the long commute. The crappy thing is i need a small car with thats good on gas so i bought this one and am stuck with it at least for a year.

Yes. You could use your amp and possibly your mids if the crossover point was high enough and they were able to keep up with the horns - but you don't simply "add horns". They have to be integrated into the install.

Alright not really the answer i was hoping for //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif , but thanks for the quick replies. Guess ill start seriously looking at replacing my subs instead.

I've read they have very good dispertion.
Horns have excellent off-axis response.

The placement is difficult because of their size //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Most dashboards simply don't lend themselves well to a horn install without some cutting. The EQ is necessary because otherwise, they'll rip your ears off.

Thanks, i think i can fit them under the dashboar, but they might not exactly be uniform which is why i was worried it could effect imaging. But once/if i get some i'm sure i'll be able to figure out placement better(see if i have to dremel some room)

Would a 7 band parametric be enough you think? I don't know if i could fit a 31-band eq in my truck.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

7.5" x 7.875" x 1" = Arc Audio MEQ-30 ... you could fit that somewhere //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Single cab truck already got an amp under both seats. No room behind seats from a box. It would be an eyesore anywhere else. roof?

I would have to spend a lot of time tuning it, but from what i hear from the rest of the horn users is that its worth it. i'm just trying to figure out how "big of a committment" it is.

Lots of places.

Door panel, glove box, headliner, under the dash, side of the console, in the console, on the subwoofer enclosure, back of a seat maybe, etc. ... you're 100% right though - making it look good would be difficult.

The only place i have net access is at work on this POS 400mhz celeron. 64 megs of ram and no burner. Can someone make me cd's with the test tones i would need to properly set both my sub and mid/high amps? Will pay with paypal. Thanks!
