why are aero ports better than any other?

It's a somewhat opinionated subject, but most people (like me) prefer them because they're easy to setup, reusable, cut down port area by nearly half, make it very simple to swap tuning via changing port length, and tend to help increase SPL.

Aero's are no better than slot ports in general they both have the + and -'s . It all about personial preferiance.
Yep, all about the personial preferiance. Or something like that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

I am wanting to try out some areo ports. However, the problem is that they have to be kind of long for my box idea, around 23" or so. And the PSP ports only come in 17" long lengths, so I'd have to buy extra lengths to make it work, and that will add up.

I think the main advantage is the flared ends increase air velocity due to the venturi effect, and don't leave you with nasty port noise (unless you box is designed improperly)

Just the opposite. Flared port ends decrease air velocity. Lower air velocity means less port noise, or 'whistle'. Squared edges create turbulence, turbulence creates port noise.

Round ports flow air more efficiently than square/slot ports, therefore they use less port area. Less port area, again, means higher volicty, the traditional problem with round ports. Flared round ports display the better air flow and higher velocity, while combatting port whistle. "Aero ports", iirc, are not just round ports with flared ends however, doesn't the intake end have a bulb or something to improve airflow?

Slot ports dont really need to be flared because air velocity is low and air motion at the edges is minimal.

The venturi effect has nothing to do with it.

I'd rather use slot ports.
1) doesn't cost money

2) adds bracing to the box

3) you can make them however long you want, and not have to worry about bracing the port itself(in most cases).
In response you really shouldn't need extra bracing if the box is properly designed and built.

What is your definition of 'extra' bracing? You mean it would be better to double-wall the box than rely on internal bracing, from say a port wall? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif In many cases the port wall(s) can be positioned so that a brace running in that plane (connecting those two walls) is no longer necessary, rendering any other bracing you may be referring to as 'extra'.
In a large box built for high power, its hard to argue against the benefits of having built-in internal bracing walls incorporated into the enclosure design.

its install dependent. but i use aeros most the time because they take up less cubic ft than slots, easier to construct box, can design an aero box in about 1 min, look nicer, and allow you to change tuning very easily. for my spl setups space is always an issue so they work very nicely.

I'm more referring to the dimensions of the box and sub placement rather than double layering. For example, my aero boxes:

With the placement of the sub (near corners) and overall slim design bracing isn't very necessary. They don't seem to flex, especially considering that the bigger one did a 146 @ 40hz at the headrest.
