Hey guys,
We've all seen threads of somone asking "What are the best 6.5's, oh and they cant be more than 150" which is a ****ing joke, I know. So I'm going to do my best describing what sounds I'm looking for and how I like my current 6.5's so we have something to go off of.
I threw Infinity's Kappa 60.7cs (90rms @ 2ohm) along with Kappa 693.7's (110rms @ 2ohm) and powered them with a Reference 475a Amplifier. I've heard a lot of people say there Kappa component tweeters were too harsh and the midbass was sub par. Well honestly I never really agreed to that, I like the tweeters although I will admit they do get a bit harsh at extreme volumes, but not enough for me to dislike them. As for the Midbass... since I broke them in I thought it was awesome for a 6.5" woofer. I installed Dynamat/RAAMat HEAVILY in my doors over the weekend and also replaced my Reference amp with a Rockford Fosgate 25 to Life Power 1000 5 Channel Amplifier, since the addition of the new much more powerful amp and the Dyna/RAAMat the bass is REMARKABLE IMO (Much better than I would expect from a 6.5). So I really don't get all the complaints, another thing I love is how "punchy" the woofers are, the response seems pretty powerful and precise.
The thing is, I've noticed minor vibrations when playing my music fairly loud, I would guess 80watts or so and higher. I know its the speaker itself and not metal to metal vibration as I have deadened the shit out of my doors and the speaker cutout. On top of that I have noticed that on "punchy hits" as I would describe them, the speakers almost sound like they are tearing - for lack of a better word (the sound is quick and occurs during the initial hit). So I'm assuming my speakers are about to blow or have blown. Although I've blown factory speakers before and home stereo speakers before and it sounded nothing like this.
Assuming the speaker is going (if I'm wrong in my assumption someone please tell me!) I have started looking around for new components. I'm so impressed with my Kappa 60.7s that I'm not entirely against just picking up a new pair, but at the same time I like to adventure and find something new (and hopefully even better). I love the midbass those things put out for me, but again if it can be better ILL TAKE IT! And I wasn't opposed to the tweeter (aluminum) but I wouldn't mind experimenting with something I little softer. And it would be a plus if my Component Set could handle 100rms at least, although not mandatory.
The Fosgate Amp is capable of
100w x4 @ 4ohm or
155w x4 @ 2ohm and
475w x1 @ 3ohm
Since I like my music as loud and distortion free as possible I'd like to keep my components close to or equal to my 693.7's (110rms @ 2ohms).
I have researched a number of Sets, some much more expensive than others that I think are worth looking into and would love some feedback from people who have had experience with some of these.
Option number 1: Infinity Kappa 60.7cs ($130)
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=15366
My current speakers Dome Aluminum Tweets, 90rms @ 2ohm and 95dB
Option number 2: Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 ($210)

I've heard great things about these, especially for the price
Aluminum Tweets, 100rms @ 3ohms and 90dB
(I'm assuming my amp would handle about 120w @ 3ohms)
Option number 3: Boston Acoustics Pro60 (Maybe 99gtxgolfer's for $160, then again they may be defective, otherwise ($250)
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=19214
Allow Dome Tweeter, 125rms @ 3ohm and 90dB
Option number 4: Alpine SPX-17PRO ($325)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_10648_Alpine+SPX-17PRO.html
100rms @ 4ohms and 90dB
Option number 5: Kicker RS65.2 ($375)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3603_Kicker+RS65.2.html
Dome Teteron Tweeters, 100rms @ 4ohm and 87dB
Option number 6: JL Audio ZR650-CSi ($450)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7610_JL+Audio+ZR650-CSi.html
Dome Aluminum Tweeter, 175rms @ 4 ohm and 89.5dB (would probably be an injustice to only power 100watts)
Option number 7: Polk Audio SR6500 ($475)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6851_Polk+Audio+SR6500.html?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=froogle
125rms @ 4ohm and 90dB
Option number 8: DLS Ultimate Iridium 6.2i ($500)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_10486_DLS+Ultimate+Iridium+6.2i.html
Dome Silk Tweeters, 100rms @ 4ohm and 91dB
Option number 9: Boston Acoustics SPZ60 ($575)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_10212_Boston+Acoustics+SPZ60.html
Dome Aluminum Adjustable Tweeters, 150rms @ 3ohm and 90dB
Option number 10: Focal 165 K2P ($580)
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_1690_Focal+165+K2P.html
Dome Tioxid Tweeters, 100rms @ 4ohm and 92.5dB
Right now the Kappa Perfects and Boston Pro60's have really peaked my interest.
I would probably likely keep it under $350 or so, but I'm interested in all of the options listed above so any feedback would be great. Although I'm likely to go with options 1-5. Also any new suggestions would be much appreciated.
Also, this will not be my primary source of bass. I'm having a friend build a MDF box for my JL 13tw5 shallow mount. (If that effects the feedback at all)
