Focal vs Infinity component sets

Hi, I'm considering upgrading to either the Focal Auditor ASE 165 component set or the Infinity Reference REF6530CX component set. They're around the same price so I'd like to know if one is clearly better than the other or if it's more a case of what sound characteristics you prefer?

I'm also going to pair this upgrade with proper sound deadening in the doors. I don't have a DSP, just running an external AB amp with 50W RMS per channel. I'm looking for loud volume with minimal distortion and speakers that have good impact with smooth non-fatiguing highs. I'm not a super analytical SQ listener, just want clarity and a pretty good sound stage.

Any feedback appreciated, thanks!

When comparing the Focal Auditor ASE 165 and the Infinity Reference REF6530CX component sets, there are several aspects to consider that can help you decide which one might be better suited for your preferences and setup.

### Focal Auditor ASE 165
1. Sound Characteristics: Focal speakers are well-known for their clarity and detailed high frequencies. They can produce a very engaging sound with a lively character. This might suit your desire for "smooth non-fatiguing highs," but the clarity can sometimes come with a more pronounced sound, which may not be for everyone.

2. Power Handling: They can handle a good amount of power, making them favorable when paired with your 50W RMS AB amplifier. Focal components usually perform well at higher volumes with minimal distortion.

3. Bass Response: Focals generally have a good bass response, though they can be slightly on the punchy side rather than deep. This might align well with your request for impact.

### Infinity Reference REF6530CX
1. Sound Characteristics: Infinity speakers are often recognized for their balanced sound and broad soundstage. The highs are typically smooth and pleasant, which aligns with your interest in non-fatiguing sound. They generally produce a warmer sound compared to Focal.

2. Power Handling: Similar to Focal, the Infinity Reference series can handle a decent amount of power. You should experience good performance with your amplifier, particularly in terms of volume without distortion.

3. Bass Response: Infinity tends to offer a more extended bass response, which can be beneficial if you enjoy a fuller low-end sound. If impact and loudness are key for you, Infinity may have a slight edge.

### Conclusion
  • If you prioritize clarity and a more vibrant sound, the Focal Auditor ASE 165 could be the right choice. They might provide that engaging feel, especially at higher volumes.
  • If you prefer a smoother sound with decent bass impact and a good overall tonal balance, the Infinity Reference REF6530CX might be more suitable.

Given that both options have their strengths, it ultimately comes down to your sound preference: lively vs. warm and smooth.

### Installation Guidance
Since you're planning to install these with sound deadening in the doors, make sure to use a quality sound-deadening material to reduce road noise and vibrations, which can enhance the performance of your new speakers. Ensuring proper installation will maximize clarity and bass response, contributing to an improved soundstage.

Lastly, you may want to ensure that your external AB amplifier is correctly tuned to avoid any distortion while boosting the volume.

I'd opt for something entirely different.

That focal set is more of an attempt to have a presence in the semi-budget-oriented component offerings, somewhere that Focal should have just stayed away from.

Focal shines where it matters in the mid to high and super high-end products; leave the budget brands to others. I mean, $180.00 set of components that use a mylar tweeter, I think not.

Between the two, the Infinity set would be the clear winner, at the very least, it utilizes a woven textile tweeter, which is just a better sound to me than most any plastic film tweeters like Mylar or polyimide.

AS for alternatives, here are a few budget lines that I think surpass either of the two in sound quality.

The German-made silk tweeters alone, in these components, are worth it (and they're roughly the same price), hands down, the better-sounding components.

And these at $125.00 (you have to load them into the cart to see the pricing) are a no-brainer over the first two sets!

Additional excellent options at $150.00 and $125.00 (in-cart pricing)

Any of these others is preferable over the Infinity or the Focal component sets.
