What to place subs on?

Alrighty friends,

So i have 2 boxed 12s in my trunk of my 98 escort zx2. The floor of the trunk of my zx2 is about a quarter inch of plywood and a layer of carpet on top of it which shields my tire. I feel like this really detracts from the amount of bass i get from the sub; So today i put a piece of cardboard under the carpet part. Is this a good idea? What would be some other cheap alternatives to get the most bass?

I have a lot of experience with the mid to late 90s Escorts. I used to run four twelves in the hatch-back way back when. You're bringing back some fond car audio memories my friend. I never had any issue with the crappy thin wood floor in those cars. As long as the box has a 3/4" MDF bottom, you should be just fine. Fire the woofers straight back and you will be very pleased with what kind of bass you can get in those cars. Probably want to upgrade the charging system though. As I recall the stock alternator is like 80 or 85A.
