What setup would be louder?

If 4 ohms stereo = 2 x 332 RMS, 8 ohms mono = 1 x 664 RMSIf 2 ohms stereo = 2 x 450 RMS, 4 ohms mono = 1 x 900 RMS

If 1 ohm stereo = 2 x 500 RMS, 2 ohms mono = 1 x 1000 RMS

4 ohms stereo = 8 ohms mono, 2 ohms stereo = 4 ohms mono, 1 ohm stereo = 2 ohms mono

Most amplifiers will not double output with half the resistance ... Most amplifiers will not halve output with double the resistance ...

If you hook your subwoofer up @ 8 ohms mono, according to your specs, it should receive 664 RMS ...
I don't know who or where you got your car audio know how from, but you only need to look as far as the first post in this thread to get confirmation that I am indeed right and you are wrong. Just look at the specs:
250rms @4ohms

450rms @2ohms

both ratings are in stereo

so if most amps don't double the power w/half the resistance, what would you call that? Sure, it's not exactly double, but close enough. Check any amp out, the rating at 2ohms will be double or nearly double the rating at 4ohms. And in this case, if you bridge it at 4ohms, the ratings jump up from 250 per ch to 900 coming out of the single channel.

So like I said before, doubling the impedance will not double the power, if anything, it'll put out less power due to the increased resistance.

Oh lord //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

The jbl 1200.1, 600.1, 300.1 all are the same at either 1 or 2 ohm, I think the earthquake D2 is similar also.

those are mono amps, not multi-channel like we were talking about. Specifically, the Lanzar OPTIdrive 500.2. Jmac is trying to tell me that if the amp puts out 332 watts rms into 2ch@4ohms, running it at 8ohms mono will increase the number to 664x1:nono:

:sigh:
Look at any 2-channel amplifier ...

Look at the 2 ohm stereo rating ...

Look at the 4 ohm mono rating ...

Notice how the 2 ohms stereo rating is EXACTLY the same amount of power as the 4 ohms mono rating ... (450 x 2 = 900 !!)

Now why do you think that is ?

When you bridge an amplifier (aka wire it in mono), each channel "sees" half the resistance of the load (So if you bridge a 4 ohm speaker to an amplifier, each channel will "see" a 2 ohm load, thus put out the same amount of power as 2 ohm stereo). Now, when you bridge an 8 ohm load to an amplifier, what does each channel "see" ? That's right, 4 ohms ... Soooooooo, 332 x 2 = What ?

But what do I know ?
Bro, you make this way too easy. I understand mono and stereo wiring, how that effects the amp and the ohm load it "sees" so there wasn't really any point to your post except to show how much you don't really know about it yourself. Check out THIS link and you will see that I am correct in saying that wiring the sub at 8ohms then bridging the amp will not double the rms rating of the amp at 4ohms stereo, if anything, it'll be the same. THE ONLY WAY TO DOUBLE THE PERFORMANCE OF AN AMP(without physically modifying it) IS BY HALVING THE IMPEDANCE, NOT DOUBLING IT! DOUBLING IT WILL LOWER THE OUTPUT EVERYTIME, UNLESS IT'S A MONO AMP LIKE A JBL POWERVALVE SERIES. I'm sure there may be a few exceptions to that statement, but they are just that, the exceptions, not the rule. You are correct though by saying that a 4ohm mono load is equal to a 2ohm stereo load, but that wasn't news to me. So, now that we are on the same page, the Lanzar amp I specified puts out 900rms x 1 @4ohms mono, If I were to run it at 8ohms mono, the output of the amp would be significantly less, prolly close to half of that figure.
I apologize if I have come across as arrogant or abrasive, it just bothers me when people try to school others w/bunk knowledge, especially when im one of the "others".

What do you know? Not as much as you think you do //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I think what is being misunderstood here is by bridgind a two channel amp to 4 ohms mono, each channel is actually seeing half of the present load,... or 2 ohms to each channel... now do you understnad how an amp will put out the same amount of power at 4 ohms bridged as at 2 ohm stereo?

Jmac, your theory is correct, but the reality is that at 8 ohms, most amps will not put out half of rated 4 ohm power... teh resistance is just too much...

I've known that, that was never an issue for me. My issue was that Jmac, in all his knowledge, was trying to tell me that doubling the impedance will in effect double the output of the amp:nono: In fact, it's the opposite.

he never said that doubling the imedance raises power...

what he stated, correctly I might add, is that when bridging amplifiers, teh higher rbidged load is equal to the lower stereo load...

when you bridge, each channel actually sees half of the load, that is why you are getting the same power.

**** man, im getting a headache //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif I don't even care anymore, I just want to know what the benefit is of running the amp at 8ohms mono vs. 4ohm stereo when the output is going to be identical. I'd rather just run it in stereo, lo pass, get my 332 to each coil and call it a day. If there is a logical reason for me to not do that let me know. I'm not trying to get "stereo" sound from my sub, I just want optimal performance from my setup w/o damagine either.
