what screws should I use

if you were to measure the size of a hole your threaded screws will just barely pass thru - your pre drill bit should be half of that size.

its super important to pre drill - but i see alot of people mess up by drilling the hole too large for the thickness of screw they plan to use.

ive had a 18" subwoofer snap the heads off two of the regular corse 1 5/8" drywall screws i normaly use to mount subs.

but that was only one time - and ive used them with much sucess in the past 8 years...

Go to Home Depot and look for Spax screws. They have specific screws for MDF that pre-drill and countersink themselves. For the sub itself, use t-nuts and machine screws. Drywall screws are a bit brittle for holding large subwoofers.
