How To Forward Face & Seal Off Trunk

I built a 4 cube box tuned to 33hz for Two AB XFL 12's. Turns out, I don't really like it tuned that low, haha. I was thinking about building another box and I think I want a sealed box.

I've been seeing a lot of guys going forward facing and sealing off the trunk. I've always fired mine back toward the taillights but I think this might actually sound better. Would I just build a Sealed box and then make the front panel exactly the size of the opening to my trunk from the back seat?

Would I be better off building a slot port box and tuning it to a higher freq. Maybe 45hz? I'm not really sure which way to go on this. The current box has a 5" wide slot port to one side and the subs share the same chamber. I want to get the most bang for my buck. I've got a big trunk (Intrepid) and I think I'm losing SPL bouncing around back there.

What do you guys think?

I want to seal off my trunk as well but there’s a little more involved than just throwing a piece of wood up. I’m pretty sure it has to be air tight and you if you want more boooom then vented is for you imo. Not that sealed can’t get loud because it can I just feel that vent is louder

I sealed off my trunk and I liked it a lot better. Try to make the box fit the opening as closely as possible. Some people use expanding foam to seal gaps - I used small pieces of plywood and lots of aluminum foil tape to make it airtight.

I'm doing an infinite baffle build right now. I'm going to do a sheet of MDF bolted down, and fill the sides with expanding foam. The difference is mine is in the front of my car, lol

Nice build thread! Can any sub function with IB? Or do u need a special sub?
Certain subs work better than others. Very generally speaking if a sub likes sealed boxes it will like IB as well. You want something with a low fs value and good excursion for sure. Seems like subs with larger Vas values work well too. Seems like I read higher Qts values were desirable as well

Uhh....I have AB Xfl 12's =)

I wouldn't imagine those are great IB performers but who knows you might just like it. It is a little ( or maybe a lot) harder to set your car up for IB than building an enclosure or two but when it works the results are totally worth it. If you are looking for every bit of output you can get though you may just wanna stay ported. IB can get loud but not as loud as a good ported box would

IB requires less power too. You'll max out the excursion on those AB subs if you keep your old amp. I'm doing an IB build because it will work best with my vehicle. I'd go ported if I could

Are we all in agreement that the box should fire into the cabin? Maybe I should spin it around and face it into the cabin? The box is the exact height of the opening behind the seat but it's about 4" less than the entire width. It almost seals off the trunk as it is, lol
