What is RMS and How do i Match it

I know the rms is the steady power going to a speaker. but what is the best way to match it. if i have a speaker at 50 rms and 120 peak, do i want an amp that pushes 50 rms and 120 peak or do i just need something in between that range. do i want to go high or lower in power? i have been confused on this forever, and am getting tired of reading crutchfields carp.

Its always better to have too much power and detune the amplifier - that way if you upgrade later, you can keep the same amps.

Say you have a component set that is 50w rms. You want an amplifier that is just that, or a littl more. Somewhere in the range of 60-75 RMS should be more than sufficient, as long as you're respectful on the gains it'll never give you a problem.

Peak means nothing. Ignore that it exists. Only pay attention to the CEA rated RMS on an amplifier, and the manufacturers suggested RMS on the speakers.

I wouldn't advise for someone new to buy an amp that has the potential to blow his speakers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

If he's going to fock with the gains, then I dont either. Maybe I shoulda pointed that out.

I emphasized the fact of being conservative on gains //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

EDIT FOR OP - Just match the amps RMS with your speakers RMS :)

Forget the word PEAK even exist... Don't worry about peak of a speaker or peak of an amp, neither mean much... just take the RMS of the speaker and match it with that of an amp..
And do so at the right impedance, and you should be set.

But since you seem to be new, I must ask if you understand impedance. Do you?
