My wiring harness has a small (like 18 or 20??) gauge 12 v wire to the head unit and the harness from the head unit also has a small gauge (hot) wire coming out of the head unit, is this ok? I mean I do not see any other way to wire this up, the box says it is a 200 watt stereo, it's been like 30 years since I hooked up a stereo, so you can imagine, I have a big amp to hook up also but I gotta get by this first. Thanks in advance- hope this makes cense -

You wont gain anything splicing a bigger wire onto the small wiring on the harness.

Wont hurt to use a somewhat bigger wire either (just dont go smaller), so if you already have some wire thats a little bigger you might as well use it.
