What do I need to know about wire kits???

So I'm buying amps and speakers and this and that. Well I find out I need a amp wiring kit too. (Never had any of this stuff when I was a kid) So I guess I need to know how I determine the size of the kit for the amp I'm installing??? And I'm gonna be using 2 amps so is it better to do the distro block thing or run 2 lines all the way to the battery??? Is one better than the other? Reccomendations??? Input??? All is welcome here!
