weird sound coming from subwoofer

There is a weird sound coming from my sub. It kinda sounds like its blown but when i move it it doesnt make the sound only wen i have it hooked to my amp. Can anyone think of what might cause this problem?

play the sub out of the box. a scratchy sound is normally a voice coil rubbing. spiders get wore out and coil rocks...

I took the dust cap off and there were 4 holes around the coil. I covered em up and it doesnt seem to make the sound anymore. Idk why they would put those holes in there.....

those might be for cooling... how did you take the dust cap off? wasnt it glued on?

those are for under cap cooling normally, they do tend it aid in noise and are a bad design. they wont make the noise ur having though...

I juss took a razor and cut it off. After i glued it back on you cant even tell. Idk why they are there but after i covered em i didnt get the noise anymore. This shouldnt cause any problems with overheating or anything will it??
