well thats what my friend said to do. turn your gains all the way up and then play music and turn them down until crackling goes away.

his head unit has a low pass filter of 85, 120, or 160......which one would be best?

Cranking gains works well after the crackling stops because thats usually when the woofer locks up and never plays again. Definitely a great idea. Crackling is usually distortion and can be due to over powering and higher volumes than the speaker can handle.

Depends on what volume it sees after all displacements. If anything, it'll be too small.
