VW GTI install

Hey,

I am in the middle of installing my friends Alpine HU in his VW GTI.

I have it all wired up, but it wont turn off when the car is turned off. The stock radio stayed on as well, but shut off when you pull the key out. This radio doesnt shut off when you pull the key. Is there anyway i can make the radio shut off with the ignition?? Please help me...ive tried everything I can think of. I tested the two wires (which i suppose is the battery constant, and the ignition thing) and they both are getting power to them all the time. Does this mean I would have to tie into something else that is only on when the car is on??

the answer is........you cant use the RED power from the harness you have to get power from........the fuse box......i got my power from the harness that plugs into the TACH side of the speedo cluster

geez....thanks for the quick reply..lol..

but...thats what i figured. I was just seeing if there was anyway to run it from the HU stuff that is already up there. I didnt want to take the time to run wire under carpet, through dash, etc....thanks guys

find the wire on the car end of the"plug" that shuts off (or doesn't put out any voltage\current) when the key is taken out, then run the red wire to it

there has to be a wire in the plug that tells the factory h\u to shut off when the car is off

i think fuse 43 is an empty iginition one, i don't think alpine is CAN BUS sensitive, when i put a temporary kenwood headunit, i spilced the power 12v, and added switch in 12 volt constant to turn it on/off manually

Yev

k, well thanks guys.....I was gonna do it today, but neither of us had time (we both screwed up on our work schedules...lol) We will prolly do it monday/tuesday, sooo if I am still stuck, ill get back on and see if you cant get those pics for me, but thanks so much for the help so far!

Under the dash, on the drivers side, there's a switched ignition power relay.

Run your power wire to that.

If it's one of the alpines with the dual 10 ga. power wires, tho, i'd run a dedicated 8 gauge wire to it, and run a relay off of the ignition power.

? What year GTI is this? I had no issue just using the wires on a Metra wiring harness with my car. Mine also turns off when they key is removed, rather then when the switch is turned to off
