voltage drop from front to back

While those statements are true and it should be checked to prevent problems in the future, the alt cannot be the problem right now as the voltage at the front is 14v.
Didn't say it was, but if he has a battery resting at 9 volts/can fall to 9 volts with the rest of the system being much higher I wouldn't put it on an alt until it was charged and or tested.

Check both batteries independent of each other and run the ground from the front batt. to the second batt. check you fuses

sounds like the second batt. is not charging correctly ( too much load not enough current )
