Versatile design?

Hey guys, I don't post much, mostly do a lot of reading on here and several other audio forums. I have decided to build a set of speakers. I can't decide on what the best design would be. I listen to a very wide range of music, anything from blues to heavy metal and rock. I like to listen to it loud and would like it to sound nice so that you can hear all the extreme highs and lows in the music. I am basically trying to get my living room to have similar sound quality as my car does...

I am considering just going with something like a 12" woofer, 6.5" mid, and a 1" soft dome tweeter. This is a very traditional design but I don't know if a line array or something would be better. I don't want to add a subwoofer to the system, I just want to run it off of my 2 channel amp.

Any help in the right direction would be great. Do you guys think I should have two mids? Go with a line array? I am not sure what is the best option.

(But that's the toy car, my boring Stratus has the audio stuff in it.)

When in doubt, go to the store and audition product to see what type of design

satisfies. Check out some high end stores and listen to the bigger systems,

ignore the price, you just want to calibrate yourself to understand your needs

better then you can form a game plan better.
