understanding ohms

i am currently looking to upgrade my bass, but i am unsure ofthe OHMS aspect. i currently have an alpine 7861 head unit going to a dei 500 4ch amp, phoenix qx5 components in the front and a dei 12" studio sub in a box. i have bought a dei 204 active crossover and some 6.5" polk audio components. i plan to use a y lead so instead of using the crossover as front + rear it will control the mids and tweeters instead of the std supllied crossover. this way i will use all 4 channels of the amp on the front components. is this a good idea and am i going about it the right way? i now want to buy some better bass for the boot, iwas thinking of dei comp x 12 subs and a dei 1100d amp, what i dont understand is if the amp if 550w @ 4 ohm and 1100w @ 2 ohm, will the amp be louder running 2 subs rather than 1:confused:
