Two Amps, One Sub???

This may have been asked, but hey, I'm new here!

Anyway, I have two JL Audio 500/1 amps and I'm replacing two 12' subs with one 13W7. From what I understand, I can wire one amp to one voice coil and the other amp to the other coil. I know that they need to be in a "Master/Slave" configuration and that they have to be tuned using a test disk and voltmeter.

My question is has anyone ever tried this and is it worth the hassle? Otherwise, I'll sell the 500/1's and get a 1000/1. I'm just trying not to lose the depreciation $$$...

Thanks,

i have the master and slave configuration and it works really well. (with 2 12w6v2's)

Yes, you have to configure each amp with a ddm and a sine wave, my only concern with what you are trying to do is that if one of the amps is not configured correctly you could mess up you sub. (dont know how accurate this is but i would just get a 1000/1 instead).

you don't have to do master/slave....just hook up one amp to each coil and MAKE SURE that each amp's gains is set with a DMM to make sure they are both matched.
I'm going master/slave because I have a remote base control up by the driver's seat.

I'm also putting a cap in the system, but I'm wiring both amps off of it so there's no chance of a voltage variance as could happen with 2 separate caps...

why would you get a cap? anyways, my understanding is this...ifyou master/slave, the slave will take the master settings, so it should be fine...dont waste your money on a cap though

I had the cap installed in my old system, figured I put in this one. It made alot of difference when I put it in originally. I'm planning on doing the "Big 3" this weekend...

the cap is a bandaid...it is covering upa bigger problem, just try out the Big3 and see where that gets you first
What can I say, I'm in Medicine... Bandaids serve a purpose. The hard part is getting the residue of when its been on too long (i.e. My mind says "I have to have a cap!)

I'll let you know how it goes....
