Tweeter Protection Information

I've been telling people in several posts about using bulbs to protect the tweeters they keep blowing. I've been using them to protect mine for some time now and haven't had any problems..... Until now. Recently the wifey was able to toss ALL 4 bulbs, however, they did just what they were supposed to do.... ALL 4 Tweeters are still in 100% perfect working order! I had to replace the bulbs, and took some pictures to show the process and explain the materials used and such stuff.... So... On to the pics....

Pic of the packaged for the new bulbs, not exactly the same as the old ones, but just about any bulb like this will do.

Pic of the specs on the new bulbs, same specs as the old ones. I'm putting a rated (not measured) 150watts RMS to each component set and the old ones have held up for about 2 years now, didn't see a reason to change anything.

New bulb soldered in.

Heatshrink put on, cleanest way to keep the ends from shorting on anything.

I also added some electrical tape to the ends to help support the wires since they're such a small guage. When I first installed these I had problems on the back door with the wires breaking off from the bulbs.

So there ya go, I'm no liar, I really use them and PROMISE you they'll help save ur tweets. Not necessarily in ALL situations, but for the majority of us this can EASILY save alot of time, money and headaches with tweets getting popped all the time.

ive run active(no passive) for over 2 years and if you have the right power and tuned properly you wont blow your tweeters, But thats a nice write up and great pics

Oh yeah, running active is definitely the way to go....

Just giving this a bump...

Of course running active is the best way to go, but for those of us who can't afford it or don't have the time, or the expertise of doing that properly and need to run passive, these cheap little answers are BIG time money and stress savers...

If you set your gains correctly and dont over power tweets you shouldnt have a problem.

Sure when you're running active, but when a person is running passive there's no way to keep from overpowering them in relation to the mids, these lights work really well to save tweeters in this application and from distortion in general.

Very interesting find you have there, i guess just a creative way of reducing the power going to the tweeter. IDK if the uncovered bulb is such a good idea though, dont they get hot? Why not use something like a resistor instead?

I don't think they do the same thing as a resistor, I couldn't hear any audible difference with them installed plus they will sacrifice themselves for the tweeter.... they really don't light up very often, unless its REALLY cranked to the moon, and even then they just flash so worrying about them being uncovered hasn't been an issue yet in 2 years....

You know what, now that i think about it, ive seen quite a few crossovers that actually have bulbs like that installed in the board on the tweeter output, i dont have an issue with blowing tweeters myself, but this does seem like a good idea, i was just worried about the heat.
