Trouble with Type-R 12"

I had a type-r 12" installed a week ago in a Hyundai Santa Fe. I went with a cheap alpine amp m350. The sub is in a Q-Logic box with 1.25 ft3. On most songs, when the volume is low, the sub sounds great. It sounds like the bass is fully surrounding me. A lot louder than the actual music, Next is my problem. It's hard to explain exactly what I am trying to say. Like when I turn up the volume, I would expect the sub to have the equivalent increase as the regular speakers. It seems that the regular speakers get a lot louder while the sub gets louder but the bass does not preside as much over the regular speakers as it did at lower volumes. I can feel the bass more, but I am a little disappointed that the bass is not overwhelming at a high level.

I am asking this to see if there is any concept that I am misunderstanding or anything that I could do differently to increase the SPL with the materials/parts I currently have.

Thanks.

you are probably turning it up past where gains are set at therefore the amp is clipping and the sub is not getting any louder. for it to get louder you need a better box along with a more powerful amp.

No doubt it is getting louder. But it is not getting equally louder as the volume goes up. When I had it installed, the install place turned the amp gain up to +9 db (max is +12 db). Would lowering this is +3 or +6 help in eliminating the clipping and ultimately produce louder bass at high levels? Or is the only way to get more SPL is to upgrade the amp?

Thanks.

I have ported right now. Would a custom ported box be worth the money?

I have been wondering this for some time now. If I added another sub, amp, and box for 2 subs (same volume for each sub) identical to what I have now, would the SPL increase be worth the extra $300?

Thanks.

i would start by upgrading your amp, the sub is 500rms, so get something that pushes 750-1000rms at that ohm and set your gain accordingly...

i think the amp would help A LOT... then if you still aren't satisfied, a custom ported box, (build yourself for 50 bucks) will help a lot too...

I think that is what I might do then. Would you recommend that I stick with the alpine line? Are there good 750-1000w rms amps that area good bang for your buck?

Thanks.

there are cheaper out there that have excellent performance. search around //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I'm sure hifonics would work just fine for you if you are on a budget
