Toyota Motor Co. is launching a recall of 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles, telling owners to immediately remove driver's side floor mats that can stick under accelerator pedals and cause the vehicles to surge forward.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned drivers of the affected models to not replace the floor mats. The recall covers:

• 2007-2010 Camry

• 2005-2010 Avalon

• 2004-2009 Prius

• 2005-2010 Tacoma

• 2007-2010 Tundra

• 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350

• 2006-2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS350

Toyota warned owners that if they suspected their vehicle was surging out of control, they should check to see if their floor mat was under the pedal. If they couldn't remove it, Toyota told drivers to step on the brake pedal with both feet until the vehicle slows, try to put it into neutral and switch the ignition to accessory power. For models with engine start/stop buttons, Toyota said the engine can be shut off by holding the button down for three seconds.

The 3.8 million vehicles is the largest recall ever by Toyota in the United States. The company declined to say how many complaints it had received over the issue.

Toyota recalled 55,000 vehicles in 2007 over the same problem affecting Camry and Lexus ES 350 models due to complaints of unintended acceleration caused by thick, all-weather floor mats sticking underneath the accelerator pedal.

But NHTSA said consumers continued to report instances of uncontrolled acceleration in Toyota models following that recall.

Last month, four people died in a horrific crash near San Diego in a Lexus ES 350 that investigators suspected may have been due to a stuck floor mat. Local media reported that in a call to 911, passengers reported the vehicle was accelerating out of control.

“This is an urgent matter,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. “For everyone’s sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration.”

Why the **** did they put the pedals so close to the floor that they get stuck. Shit, in my Taurus you could have a dead hooker laying on the floor and 0 chance of having the pedals sticking.

On a side note,

I still don't understand why the **** the people that crashed didn't throw that bish in Neutral, reverse or park......

cause park and reverse do nothing?
we threw my friends pos suby in reverse one night doing about 70(we were putting a new transmission in). car screetched to a halt and kinda started moving backwards. took the ****** out the next day, and the gears had about 3 teeth on them

but IT STILL STOPPED

umm..ever thrown a car into park at speed? $100 says it doesn't keep going.
because all lexus' have mechanical linkage to the *****?

shit is old school bro. much like the other luxury cars with push start, infrared keys, etc, shit was probably all electric and wouldnt do shit if you tried to throw it into anything the ***** control module thought was ****ed up.

no they still will grind the gears. my mom let my retarded sister drive her 09 lexus and as she was pulling it into the garage she put it in park before she came to a stop and jerked the car pretty bad. granted throwing a car into park at 80 mph isnt going to stop it probably but it will slow it down enought for it to roll to a stop and not go flying off a bridge or whatever happend

lulz, aint no ****ing gears bro.

trust me i know what grinding gears sounds like and when you go from drive through nuetral and reverse to get to park, there will be some grinding. dont believe me, take your car out and try it

lol

ANyways, my buddy threw his moms caravan into park @ like 50, car stopped faster than any braking experience Ive ever been in, dead stop in 40 feet!!

They did this on mythbusters and throwing it in parking or reverse did nothing other than slow it down, but not enough to stop it faster than the brakes. They also tried it with a stick shift and they couldn't get the transmission to go into reverse while the car was going forward.

The main point I was trying to get was to disconnect the engine from the road. Even if it was computer controlled, neutral would still disengage the *****, thus stopping the vehicle from accelerating out of control.

people are ****ing noobs, put it in neutral and turn the key off.

btw i have a 08 tundra lol never had the problem

A manual in neutral would certainly slow the ***** down, or just throwing it in a lower gear. I'd rather replace an engine/******/subsequent damaged parts than put my family in danger.

Park and Reverse will work as well, for autos. ****ing noobs not knowing how to drive a car.
