Best vehicle I ever drove was a 2001 Ford F-250 with the V-10 that belonged to a friend of mine. We have these 45 MPH curves on US 101 between Reedsport and Florence. The truck took them at 70 MPH effortlessly. For comfort, it was better than my Cadillac. Power-wise it was like the Good Old Days when we had a 460 under the hood. Tons of interior room, easy to drive, loaded with all the goodies, this was no mere stripper truck, it was a Real McCoy of a vehicle! Built like a Russian tank and solid as Fort Knox, Ford got my vote for The Truck To Buy if you went big.
On the other hand you couldn't give me an intermediate American-made truck. That is what makes Toyota's problems with the Tacoma so surprising. The Japanese always did well at the smaller stuff it seemed. I have seen some of their vehicles from the 1980's and earlier rust out on the Oregon coast, where salinity is high, but by and large their smaller vehicles held together well.
If you want big, you buy American. We still build the best big stuff on the planet. If you want intermediate, small or micro, you go Japanese. That's been their strength for decades. Seeing how Toyota is responding to the problem shows just where their corporate head is at and they see things in the long run. Toyota wants to be the #1 manufacturer of vehicles in the world and with a combination of good vehicles as well as a willingness to step up when Things Go Wrong, they will hit that mark and keep it for a long time.
