My Odometer Broke... story inside.

I have a '98 Ford Mustang [232, BABY!! (sarcasm)] and a few months back the odometer broke. I didn't pay too much attention to it seeing how I'm more or less retaining some value in my car.

But recently I've been overhauling the whole thing. Tune-Up, new alarm, new speakers, clean some stains up. So, I decided to take the control cluster off and see what was happening with my cluster. Now, this is where I put pix

This is what they're supposed to look like:

All the teeth have been melted / torn off. The base that holds the gear in place melted/broke off as well. ^-^

Good ol' Fords.

I looked up the gear, ~$30 bucks for that little plastic POS! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

Whatever. When it comes in, I can actually equate my real MPG's and add another check to my seemingly neverending list of 'things to fix.'

Only good thing about them is the fact that if an intake manifold dies you can buy a new engine for cheaper than the manifold...

The speedometer on my 94 accord is jacked up right now. I dont feel like bringing it in to the shop and paying them to look at it.

What do you think could be messing it up?

It reads a lot of the times but sometimes it will just drop to 0 and stay there for like 2 mins when I am driving.

same thing happened on my 96 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif it would work for a while and quit....back and fourth oneday it quit all together the mph still works...How hard is the gear to get to and where can it be ordered from?

Maybe thats the same problem I have then except with my speedometer

Well, for my car it was incredibly easy.

But what it seems like you guys are talking about is an electronic one. This is an analog odometer.

But, actually getting to it is incredibly easy. I just had to take out prolly 10-12 screws at most and then take off a clip and I was in. Installing it looks incredibly easy as well. Just slide it in place. Doesn't seem too hard.

I'm getting mine from http://www.odometergears.com

It took me maybe 10 minutes to take the bezel and gauge cluster out + dismantling the gauge cluster + getting to the gears.

Then another 10 to put it all back togehter... actually, 15. Right before I put the bezel back on I realized I missed a screw and had to completely dismantle it again. -.-

But, most people average 30-40 minutes for this install. It took me less 'cause I've taken my gauge cluster out many-a-times before, so I'm used to it's ins and outs.

On a scale from 1-10 in terms of difficulty, I rate it a 1.5.

On a scale from 1-10 in terms of 'probability of fvckin' sh!t up' I rate it a 2-3. It's hard to mess the gauge cluster up unless you do something incredibly stupid.

Just search up your car on Google and see what people said. On some cars you have to replace the whole cluster, but if it's a Mustang and your odometer stopped working (and it's analog) odds are the gears died.

NOTE: If you're using this to base your install off of, remember to put some sort of lubricant on it!!!!

I can't stress this enough. I'm gunna use vaseline.

You can use whatever-- just make sure it's plastic-safe.

EDIT:: If you have nearly any Domestic car, and your Analog odometer died, you should take it apart and see if the gears are dead. You should be able to see if it's gone or not. I could spot it easily.

And if this is for a Mustang, look at the "work gear" which is the white spiral gear directly attached to the motor. If it's black, replace it. If it's white, it should be fine. Most of the time it's the "main gear" that dies.

Just a heads-up.
