Have you ever USED a Compaq ? Seriously ? I mean, seriously ? They're the shittiest computers you can buy ...
All computers work well with users who aren't ignorant... I didn't say compaqs were great... but they sure beat gateway...

and i beg to differ... EMachines are far worse then any compaq...

Thinkpads are the shiet. LIke someone said above i get a thinkpad. not only that these things are reliable and upgradable. can't say that about many laptops. but toshiba is well built as well. can't go wrong with toshiba though.

For that kinda price range I would choose an Alienware Area-51 5700. Starting price $1306 CDN. Or the Alienware Area-51 5500. That starts at $1158 CDN. The only difference I see is that the 5700 has a 17in screen, while the 5500 has a 15.4in screen. You can customise too.

I would stay away from Compaq and they **** big hairy balls. I bought a laptop from them and within 2 months the harddrive literly shattered. Then a month later, the motherboard fried, and then 2 more months after that, the motherboard fried again. I never has it for a year and I sold. And I also has a few other people that owned Compaq laptops and they would screw up. I say stay away from them.

Toshiba laptops. I have one right now and I couldn't be happier. I had it for a little over a year now. Not a single problem with it.

Another laptop I would look into is Acer. A few of my buddies own one and they aee very happy with it.

So Alienware, Toshiba or Acer. Those are the 3 I would look into.

I would have to say pretty much any namebrand would be ok, if you dont do stupid stuff to it. Problems happen with every computer from EVERY company. I am using a compaq right now, and absolutely love it. It has not had a single probelm and I've had it for 6 months now. My sisters toshiba has had problems since she bought it. I would choose the computer that suits you most (price, specs, etc) since problems will happen with every computer if you dont treat it right.

No matter what computer you get, you need to keep it all updated, keep spyware,/virus protection updated especially. Get a firewall to protect it, etc.

I worked for Gateway for 3 years before they closed their retail locations. Definately go with a Toshiba, they're a little bit more than the competition but they are solid machines. Toshiba definately uses higher quality suppliers than Campaq, Gateway, and Dell. I don't like the new Sonys but the new HPs are nice as well... Acer and Fujitsu have a couple good models but most of their stuff is junk.

i used to use my dads Toshiba (couple years old now) laptop a lot, it mostly worked fine, except it overheated and shut off occasionally, im guessing this was because the fans were on the bottom

i havent had any problems with the Dell im using now though

It overheated and shut off because your hair got caught in the fans and prevented them from moving air.

I'm definitely not a Mac guy, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Powerbooks - however, the 12" is the only one in my price range //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
The PowerBooks are awesome machines, very solid. Macs hold value, I sold my year old PowerMac for $100 less then what I bought it for. You don't have to worry about spyware or viruses, and Apple's support is great.

Mac sucks i cant stand it ... almost makes me throw up
Care to share why they "****" ? I think you have some issues if a type of computer almost makes you throw up.

It's a Pentium...you ***.
Looks good though.
At least it isn't a P4.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah, Toshiba makes good, solid notebooks. For the price, they are a nice all-around computer that can do almost anything effectively.

With that said...I use ibuypower...but I don't know about you Canadians.
