Well it's to show all these other people how to calc. the airspace...you just got to cut out the shapes, and even if they dont come out right, the triangle, you can find another shape and subtract it...

the more I look at this picture, the dimensions are messed up... near the top you have 4" which is longer then the 5" dimension at the bottom, also your back piece is 21" + 3" , but this would make the front piece larger then 24" since it's angled
or maybe I'm high on resin fumes...

thats correct. but if u cut a square in half, your going to have an angle piece that is longer than 2 sides, that is the definition of a triangle.

yes i agree, so if the original poster was to cut his boards with this digram, his front piece would come up short...

He'll come up about a half inch short.

A²+b²=C²

5²+24²=C²

5²+24²=C²

25+576=601²

Square Root of 601 = ~24.5...that is the length of the front slanted piece

Exact volume is 1.25 cu.ft.

Total Area of the side profile subtracting for 3/4" MDF = 108.2306 sq.in x 20" id width = 2164.6120 cu. in. ÷ 1728 = 1.25 cu.ft.

That's the great thing about using SketchUp, it will do all the math for ya in determining the square inches of shape's and then you can calculate the rest using good ole math.
