To all motorcycle riders!!!!

I want to get a bike, but I know nothing about it. So far my plan is to take the MSF and then maybe look for a bike, possibly a Ninja 250r. What about insurance? How much more is it usually for a bike with a fairing? If it's that much more, then suggest for me some decent DP bikes. I'm going to throw out the budget of $2000, but the lower the better. Around $500 would be oh so sweet lol.

P.S: I'm looking at motorcycle.com right now, but just thought i'd ask here since I frequent here more often.

I only had it for a year and then bought a 750. I grew up riding dirt bikes and everything so maybe its just me. Most people will recommend something small if you have no bike experience. Only thing that ***** is once you get the hang of it you WILL want something bigger and faster.

Insurance should be pretty cheap for any bike if it's just liability, but you are going to pay a premium for a sport bike. Also, my first bike was a Kawasaki Eliminator 125, top speed of 60 mph. I now ride a 1991 BMW K100RS (top speed about 130ish now) but I'll tell you, there are days that I would rather have my old Eliminator back.

My sister had a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 250, and it was a blast. Probably the perfect around-town bike. However, if you're planning on riding for a long distance than you'll want something bigger. The ninja is definitely a good bike to get started on, though.

As for price....I can't say. You'll just have to shop around. Usually, once you get your MSF cert. than most people and dealers will let you test-ride something before you buy it.

This is so true. You'll grow out of your first bike pretty fast, but I would say that it's a necessary stage.

That explains alot. I have no experience whatsoever, have a pretty protective mother. I'm pretty sure I'll want to upgrade, but I def. want to get the hang of things first before getting crazy. Probably won't even hit the freeway the first year lol.

The ninja is what I was looking at. There are some around my area, but def. not for the price some are looking for. I suppose I can buy one new and finance it for low monthly payments. That's not an option I'm looking for though.

That's why momma is flipping out about me wanting a bike in the first place

OP are you a big guy? I would recommend the ninja 500 over the 250 if you're of any decent size. I've been riding my 500 for 2 seasons now and it's still got enough speed to keep me interested. You should easily be able to pick up a nice used one on craigslist within your budget. I'm glad your going to take the MSF and aren't trying to jump on a 600 (or worse) right out of the gate. My buddy refused to listen to me when he got his first bike and now he has a thread about him flipping it in the thunderdome //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Also insurance is like $110 a year for me through progressive and that includes the optional theft coverage.

I am Asian, far from a big guy lol. I'm 5'6" (5'7" w/shoes) and 140lbs. And yea man, I'm actually terrified of a motorcycle (in a good way) so I'm taking the necessary steps to make sure I don't die. Life is still pretty for me.

As far as your insurance, that sounds pretty cheap, do you have a good driving record?

don't get the 250r get an older 600 if you have to, my r6 was slow when i first got it but after some major engine work, and dynotuning shes up to par.

save a little if you have to.

mines the blue one, but the white one in the back is the r6s which is that same as the 03-05 which you can get for around 3000 in good condition.

I'd rather start off slow though. I do understand what you're saying, but I think in this case having less power is better. I know I won't be stupid with it, but that doesn't mean I can control it either. Nice bike though, looks hawt.

Btw, what about suggestions on safety equipment? I heard it could be $1000 in those things alone. Yikes
