Three Questions. Input Needed!

I have my 12" SI Mag in 2.5cuft @ 32hz. I contacted SI asking them if my enclosure was to big since some songs are muggy and sloppy at times. SI said my enclosure is too big and needs to be 1.8-2.0.

SO... I'm giving the mag 1200wrms @ 1ohm (rated at 12v) and am expierencing mugginess, voltage drops and light dimming. My questions are:

1.) Should I wire to 4ohms? (my amp is rated 500wrms @ 4ohm (rated at 12v), My car runs at 13.8-14.1.

2.) What is the formula to figure out if there is an audible difference between to different wattage ratings?

3.) Is there a formula to figure out how many watts I am putting out at ___w @ 4ohm @ 13.8v? Instead of the rating 500w @ 4ohms @ 12v.

blocks of wood will help with the volume size, the above mentioned solutions are the opposite of what you need to do. those will actually make the box act even larger.

You'll want to run winISD and find out what changes need to be made to the port.

going from 1 ohm to 4ohm will give you a theoretical loss of 4db. It should be only slightly noticeable if at all. Your electrical system will thank you though.

500w divided by 12v = 41.66 amps

41.66 amps x 13.8v = 575w

Too large of a box can be a good thing... if you have a sub sonic filter that is variable enough. just turn the filter way up until it sounds better. you can actually get really efficient and better sound quality by having too large of a box and the proper crossover settings. the head engineer at JBL actually recommended this on another forum.

Thanks for the input guys. I can guarentee there are no air leaks though SpeedEuphoria. I guess i'll wire down to 4ohms and give it a try until I can build a smaller enclosure. I mean, I have a 115amp alt, I'm also running 50 X 2 to the speakers, so I guess I'm not gettin the full 1380w from the subwoofer amp @ 1ohms anyways due to electrical limits?

An audible difference between 1200w and 500w? Uhh yeah pretty sure there is...
Not as much as you would think. In order to double the output decibels from a speaker you need 10x as much power.

In order to increase 3 decibel you need 2x the power.

One decibel difference is inaudible to many people.

Your right though, a 4 db difference is audible, but power compression that is likely happening at the low 1ohm wiring is probably going to cause the theoretical decibel drop to be less then 4 db's.

A 2-3db drop or less is can be inaudible.

It would be well worth the few db loss in order to save his electrical system from destruction. also his electrical system is having voltage drop, so hes not getting 1200w.

this is true

what amp are we using here?

Incorrect.....you are thinking of the pillow like polyfil which it isn't. A pillow is contained. It will absorb reflecting waves and also take up volume. It isn't going to let the fibers inside the pillow vibrate enough to create enough heat to do the "box fooling".
