The True Facts about breaking in a sub...

My system will be installed soon and I would like to know what to do to break in my sub properly. It is a 12 W6V2 in a 1.5 cu sealed box run by a jbl 600/1. I dont have anything to free air it with so is the best thing to do just keep the volume at a medium listening level for the first 2 weeks? What is a moderate listening level? 15? (alpine 7892) Please let me know as I dont want to harm my sub but I would rather play it loud sooner if keeping it at a low level doesn't do much.

Take a bat, preferably around 34 in, 31 oz, and beat it repeatedly until it is no longer physically usable..lol...play it just enough to get it moving for about 6-8 hours, using test tones would be the best to play.

Mafia style eh snova? LoL

Forge'bout'it

From what I understand, 6 - 8 hours in free-air is best (as long as you keep the power down).. I'd suggest making some kind of make-shift holder and run it out of the box to break it in.. I'd rather have it done in a day than wait a week or two with it in the car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Course, I don't have test notes and got my 10"s in today, can't break them in on the stereo without the test notes, **** thing plays symbol crashes!! full range *sigh* so it's tough to get it to have a full smooth run..

hope that helps..

Not sure what you have access to or if you can run your computer speakers to a stereo..but I just ran my speaker outs on the comp to my stereo.. Fired up WinISD Pro, and am running the signal generator.. at 10 Hz.. you should see those cones MOVE!!!

Pretty d a m n nice.. I can actaully hear it if my ears are within 4 inches or so.. I have one question though (for Jmac).. I ran them up to the point that there was a VERY faint ticking .. like an electrical arc of TINY amounts.. not hearing anything that sounds like bottoming out.. I turn it up a little more and it gets a tiny bit noisy, then I seem to hit some kind of resonance and as I turn it up a bit more it's perfectly quiet (execpt the 10 Hz sound //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif ).. should I run below that 'noisy' part? or just above it where it sounds like it's floating (still no bottoming out it seems).. if I turn it up past that float point (just a tad) it seems to bottom out.. so, is under the float better? or should I pass that little noisy area and float it just before bottom out?

Just don't want to break anything.. but 'as loud as can without bottom out' seems to be the thing.. just not sure how exacting that is supposed to be //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

EDIT: Float is probably the wrong word.. I mean they make no nois other than the 10 hz sound, the slight electrical tick goes away too.. Float would be almost no movement.. they are moving a ton.. just over that point they start to tick (presuming that's the bottoming out)..

at 10 hz, you are probably just hearing the actually cone movement, not that 10hz sound.

By the way, I thought the point of breaking in a sub was to get that surround nice and loose, in other words, breaking it in with music won't really break it in that much. I think using a tone like 10- 20hz is the best way, that way your surround will get maximum stretch. Just make sure you dont give it a million watts while testing it out lol.

Yo whats up i got the same setup, jl12w6v2 and a jbl 600/1, however i havent got my box yet. I see you have a 1.5cf box but i was thinking on getting a 1.25cf, any particular reason you went with the 1.5 instead of a slightly smaller one?
