The Official Type R Thread

these type r subs are a pain LOL for me atleast, i dont have the room to do 3.5 cubes each, let alone 2.5 or so. i may just give it hell building a box that looks nice, then figure the size after lol. my car has a dip in the floor and a small opening so its difficult for me to fit a big box.

Amp can supply 450W @ 2 Ohm

For sound quality should I go with a pair of 12'' Type-S subs (225W/sub) or a single 12'' Type-R (all 450W)? These will be installed in the cab of a truck.

The type-s subs are rated 300W RMS and we all know the type-r is rated at 500W.

Another consideration is the enclosure size. Due to space limitations the two Type-S subs can only receive a max of 1.2 cu. ft. per sub. The Type-S would get to enjoy 2.5 cu. ft. I'm planning on keeping the enclosure sealed for now. All input is welcome.

Thanks for all your help so far. Deciding on a sub arrangement has been difficult.

That's funny...as Alpine's specs show it to have a Qts of 0.43, at least for the '04 models.

Assuming that they haven't changed T/S parameters too drastically, that models up to fit an air-suspension system quite nicely. This is also backed up by my own personal experience - I installed an '04 Type R in a buddy's VW in a low-Qtc sealed alignment, and it sounded beautiful. Certainly an excellent value for the money. Was it an all-out SPL setup? No, but that's not what he wanted.

The Type R can most certainly be run sealed, and does a very good job at it. Nor does it need the crazy amounts of power people have been recommending lately, at least not for daily use.

you know, your funny because the 04 and 05 are way diffrent than what most may think. dude im an installer,do i know it all no, im not saying the R is a terrible sub sealed, but its not ideal. anyone will tell you who has experienece with it that its not a sealed sub. but if he wants it sealed i have no objections, i was putting in my 2 cents..peace

The SWR-1241D is completely different from the SWR-1242D, Jack ...
The SWR-1242D has a Qes of 0.50 and Fs of 29 Hz, making for an EBP of 58 ...
I stand corrected.

Regardless, I think in principle having one higher quality sub is better from an SQ standpoint than having two lesser-quality ones...

WTF LYK OMGAWD MAN LYK I AM AN INSTALLER SO LYK I KNO WTF IM TALKIN BOUT YO, FO REEL LYK CIRCUIT CITY IZ DA SH*T YO.

lmfao.

The Type R will be fine sealed. End of story.

I myself would take the Type-R Ported in a 2.3cuft box, I start making mine today, and will know the outcome by wednesday night when the parts get in... if you can hold off till then I can let you know what 1 sounds like in a truck, as that is where mine will be installed.

I can even give you the dimensions as well, Im putting in 2, but I can give the specs for a single 12" Type R in a 2.3cuft box tuned to 32hz.

PM me if interested.

Thanks to everybody that has responded. It seems that with my space, power and enclosure type restrictions that a pair of Type-S might be the way to go. It would be nice to know that what I've installed has the potential to go very loud as the Type-R's would allow. However I have to consider the every day use factor. For rock and metal, in my opinion, a sealed enclosure is ideal when you want the subs to hang with every beat. Therefore the type-R might be more than I need.

Now a second question. Sorry about this. Should I spend the extra coin on a pair of infinity perfects?

I'm sorry, but why are you not considering a sealed Type R? Please tell me what that gentleman above (the "installer") didn't cause you to make this decision...
