The Bigger The Better

ok as of late i notice alot of people are saying that the bigger the magnet the better the sub....what in the world is going on here...who is giving this information or where r they getting this idea from....is this some form of bandwaging the with the wrong info...cmon!

but anyway magnets dont mean anything....the bigger the surround eats up the cone area...but at the same time the bigger the surround doesnt mean the louder the speaker

ill leave it up to mr powerbass to answer.....seems funny how our fav subs have large magnets/voice coils..oh ya ,I forgot.Its all wow factor,no actual purpose.c'mon guys....

Funny you mention that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I've seen Dan Wiggins specifically mention that he could have made the motor structure for the Brahma much smaller and not given up a lick of performance....but he didn't think it would have as much marketability as a "supersub" given that it would look physically smaller than the competition.

I ask the starter of this thread to define"better". louder? higher power handling? what? how come nobody mentions the voice coil, to me bigger means more power handling SOMETIMES. so like I said is bigger better? are you doing a spl setup where high power handling,massive superwoofers are needed? then probably, LIKe I said....It is a very open question

Moral of the story;

Voice coil size will be adequately based on the needs of the driver in question. Having a 2" or 2.5" VC doesn't make a particular sub inferior to one with a 3" VC.

exactly.

type R has a 2" coil... and we all know what that thing is capable of //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

CVR also has a 2" coil, and although the driver kicks *major* *** at low power, its not nearly comparable to the power handling of the type R.

Generally a bigger, heavier coil will yield less effeciancy but more thermal power handling. Mechanical power handling has 0 to do with the size of the coil... and thats generally the limit that will be pushed before the sub goes thermal in a typical application.

RL-P has a 3" coil... and rated for more XMAX... but it bottoms out earlier than the type R and thermally handles a little less power. Cooling systems are fun //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

1-I said i agree on the surround/cone issue. 2- I did not say anything about "inferior" due to coil size,i said POSSIBLE power handling. 3 Dan Wiggins didnt go smaller as u stated,must be because to people,bigger APPEARS better,when in actually it isnt always.

I thought I stated that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

But it was in response to your sarcastic "seems funny how our fav subs have large magnets/voice coils..oh ya ,I forgot.Its all wow factor,no actual purpose.c'mon guys" comment.......when in reality, much of it is just for wow factor.

but it is most of the time... right?

lol, id stop digging your hole... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
