That feeling... is it more based upon dB or frequency response?

ok here's my question:

in general, when you hear someone bumpin down the street you can normally hear them from a block or two due to the loudness.

....then you have the other type of bass. the kind where you don't hear anything, you kind of just think to yourself "wtf is that"... as the vehicle gets closer things start to shake and you can tell its just some deep DEEP bass.

now is this a combination of SPL and low tuning, or is this just basically based on size of sub, enclosure, etc?

i guess what i'm gettin at is... what creates each sound? loudness is one thing, but that rumble/deeeep bass that you FEEL before you hear... is that just pure SPL or more of a frequency type thing (ie the sub going very low)?

id say a combination of both..
low hz with low output wont get you much...

high output with high hz will also just annoy the **** out of anyone.

was that confusing?
very, //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

so the "rumble effect" in a sense could be had with even a 10" or 12", just either sealed or ported and tuned really low?

given theres enough input (current) to produce enough power, but im mainly referring to the setup... ie tuning, enclosure (sealed/ported), diameter of sub, etc.

you could get the same effect sealed but would take more subs and power.like your upgrade system there...youd prolly go up to 8 or10 cuft sealed for that low ground shake youre lookin for. 5 ft for an 18 sealed probably wont hit as low as you want.

well see, i actually had a very big discussion on a previous thread..

yeah an 8 or 9 cube sealed box will go lower, but through discussing and looking at the specs of the XXX, most people are saying with ~5 1/2 cube sealed mainly because:

- going VERY large (8-9 cubes sealed) will go really low correct, but people were also saying (including RE themselves) that this can have a negative effect on other frequencies and may produce a "muddy" sound effect. RE right off the bat told me to go no larger than 5 cubes because then it can effectively "downgrade" the sound quality of the sub..

now, i consistently get differing reports on this... some saying i'm wrong, some backing me up. its either ~5.5 cubes, or 8 cubes. i'm leaning a lot towards the 5.5, but i still havent had it built yet and i'm open to other considerations..

my experience is big box, low tuning gets the deep stuff. i know what your gettin at. theyre both loud but a different kind of loud. alot has to do with amp tuning also. 50-down is non directional so thats the stuff your going to hear and not see.

it may be a choice in songs and how those certain songs reproduce the lows
